What's the longest that you have ever kept a fire going? I haven't relit since a few days before Christmas so I'm at a little over 2 weeks now. I have made it about 2 months in the past, from late December until the end of February. Eventually we go away for a weekend or it warms up the fire is allowed to burn out. It is supposed to be 55 here Saturday so there is a chance I'll be letting it burn out. It would be good to get my insert shoveled clean. It lacks an ash trap and pushing hot coals to the side while trying to shovel out ash gets old.
havent really paid that much attention, i usually let the stove go cold a few times even if it doesnt warm up too much to sweep the chimney and check it.
First year with the BK. I see my supply of super cedars and matches being greatly reduced in the future. It seems like there are always coals in this thing.
LOL All winter & we get long winters. Hope to break up the continuos burn ,by taking a vacation sometime during winter. Some winters we are able to swing a vacation somewhere warm, some winters not
About 10 days I think. The old lady is finally starting to get the same joy from restarting the morning fire from coals that I get from restarting it after work.
Since November sometime. Instead of stuffing it in the AM when it needs it after about 3 weeks I have found mostly ashes in the back, front and then push the coals into the cleaned out spots and try to get the ashes from under. I've tried using a sifter and it works but I get fine ash all over. Throw some thin pine splits on the coals with the air wide open and they usually fire up in a couple minutes. Throw some big chunks of pine in and in about 45 minutes we're back in business like nothing happened.
I think the longest we've ever gone without re-lighting a fire would be from the last week of October until early in March. This year and in the past several years though it seems we've gotten a few really warm days each month to break up the routine. We are hoping for some of that in January but not sure if it will come to pass or not. However, they are forecasting 43 for Saturday but the rain will no doubt keep the fires going to keep the chill and damp out of the air.
About the same as Dennis. November thru Mid March. Stove will hold coals enough to relight for about 2 1/2 days if I dampen it all the way down. A C
Even here in SC I have gone several weeks. We will get a warm spell or most likely go out of town so it will go out. This thing will hold coals for over 50 hours sometimes but I'm not patient enough to restart from just them so I light it up with a match. Bit I can load the stove on Friday night and have a few coals Sunday afternoon. But like I said I will use a match. But here in SC 50s and an uninsulated home still means a fire or else its cold here in the house.
