I think I've spent $8k over the last 10 years trying to find a mattress that my wife will tolerate (Princess and the Pea situation) and won't cave in within a year. I suppose I could chase around the warranty but getting the same junk again is sickening too. It seems in the new world order of memory foam and adjustable beds, 3-5 years is considered average (!)!)!???)!))!!!! (No wonder landfills are overflowing). This time around she wants a Sleep Number air mattress. I've heard mixed things and I'm not excited to spend so much for an air mattress. I've found a few different possibilities that might be much better but I've been wrong 3 times before. I sleep like a 6' log, I just lay there and sink in. Night by night my butt just ends up lower and lower until I'm sleeping in a s***ty hammock. I need a mattress that stays flat. I'll even accept replacing the pillow top every few years as long as the mattress itself holds up. Please talk to me if you experienced this agony and found a lasting solution. (Sorry, if you've had your mattress less than a year or two, I just don't consider that "lasting" yet.)
The mattress makers have started their marketing campaign of 7-8yrs max in the past decade or so.... My mattress has lasted me 14+ years and counting - standard coil spring. Only thing that has ever kept me up at night was debt or a disc hernia, the later resolved itself, and the former will be completely gone(mortgage and all) next fall
we slept on one of those memory foam, at place we stayed at, super comfy. wife wants one now, not sure about longevity though.
I feel your pain, man. Thankfully, me and the wife can sleep on almost anything. About 15 yr. ago we spent the cash and got a Sterns and Foster Queen for about $1500 ( in Y2K money). It's still as good as the day we got it. We got the plain Jane model and have since added a memory foam topper. Wife loves it. I can't tell the difference. Anyway, I'm pretty sure this mattress has another 10+ years. That's our experience, your mileage may vary...
I used to have a sleep number. It seemed very comfortable in the store, not so much when we got it. We tried for almost five years to get used to it. It just didn't happen. We just got rid of it a month or so back and replaced it with a memory foam mattress. We took a bath money wise on the sleep number, but the new one is much more comfortable for us. I know others who have them and love them, it just wasn't for us.
We've gone through at least two memory foam mattresses and unfortunately they don't hold shape for more than 6 months. I'm doing some research that suggests a high quality coil spring and latex foam mattress will be a good choice. And to avoid major national brands and store brands.
I've had a memory foam mattress for 8 years now and it's still going strong. The brand is Bergad Isoform, but I'm not sure if they're still around. I know it wasn't cheap, but was still a better deal then Tempurpedic. I think the thing with memory foam is you have to drop some coin to get something that won't sink after time. My parents have had a Sleep Number for close to 10 years now and they still like it. They got it slightly used from someone they knew that didn't like it (that couple probably weighed 600lbs combined, not sure if that had anything to do with their dislike of it).
I used to believe that. But my last king-size memory foam mattress cost over $3k with a significant discount and generally good "ratings". It had body impressions within a year. My research indicates that some experts will advise that cost and durability are poorly related in the mattress market. Also, be aware that mattress manufacturers are in control of the vast majority of mattress review sites and they filter that content heavily.
I had a sleep number for many years and loved it, but the wife hated it. After it developed a leak we decided to change. Went to a natural latex foam mattress. Absolutely love it.
I'm always shocked at the cost of mattresses...maybe I'm just old but a standard kind of mattress shouldn't cost so darn much! (Steps down and offers soap box to someone else)
Reducing the durability of a durable good is a time-tested formula for MBAs to get huge bonuses and Mercedes with red ribbons on them for Christmas. All it takes is a strategy to not get nailed on warranty and a plausible reason to adopt something "new". You can darn well bet that no manufacturers fought ethanol in fuel because they knew it could only help their sales and service volume. Memory foam, particularly junk quality stuff made overseas, was the magic bullet that killed the ever-effective coil spring mattress I think.
I just got a sleep number mattress 3 weeks ago today. I got the basic base and mattress two pillows and mattress protector. $2250 delivered installed and old mattress hauled away. I shopped my self crazy looking at every mattress I could find. I was all set to buy a temper pedic cloud for$ 1699 then I looked at the sleep number. The people at the sleep number store know there stuff, unlike other stores who were quick to sell me there " Best" mattress . Honestly I have never slept this good in years! No more back pain, no neck pain. I have had a hip replacement and was tough to get comfortable laying without a pillow between my legs. Not anymore !
Like many, we too have had problems with mattress' not lasting. One of the best we had was a pillow top which I loved but it just did not seem to last very long and I hate to buy a mattress very often because they are not cheap. I thought we'd like a memory foam and have heard good reviews on them but neither my wife nor I liked them when checking them in a store. My wife really liked the Sleep number but I wasn't real high on it. Then when checking another one out, while I was getting off the bed we heard a rip. Seems the mattress cover simply ripped and I could hardly believe just how thin that thing was!!!! Yet, we have one neighbor who are on their second sleep number and love it. First one lasted them around 15 years or possibly more. All in all, we're still up in arms on what we might get next. I do believe they claim this is the right time of year to buy a mattress as for the best price.
