So, who likes what? Scabbard style or mounted in a secure rack? I'm looking for something to tote around a long gun on that 6 x 6 I picked up last year. Not a side by side- Polaris Sportsman. Because of the dump bed, a rear scabbard doesn't seem likely. The front cargo rack would work but not sure what works with the Polaris. I've read some reviews it can be difficult to properly secure gun racks to. Local terrain is very rough, I need something up to the task. What do you folks like?
I've used just about every type of gun rack on an ATV. I mutch preferred the scabbards, I can do enough damage to a firearm while hunting, don't need to add to it while it's on the ATV. Back in the day a buddy of mine had a Sportsman 6x6, he had a scabbard mounted with the barrel pointed to the rear, at a slight downward angle, it was on the outside of the bed. With it mounted like that he could still utilize the bed and dump capabilities.
SPORTSMAN LOCK & RIDE GUN SCABBARD MOUNT | Polaris ATV Store Might be able to make this work as well... with a few minor modifications.
I think I just need to get a scabbard and figure out a mount that works for me. Looking at Kolpin 6.0 scabbards, but open to suggestion.
Sorry BK, the opposite, he is looking for ideas too and I was bringing this thread to his attention. He googled a week or so ago and was distracted by the results and posted it here instead.New Rack | Firewood Hoarders Club Except, the FarmHand78 link might be his solution.
Cabelas has those Kolpin gunboots on sale for $45 right now. I'm probably gonna pick 1 or 2 up, build a mount for them at a later date. Custom BK mounts......awww yeah!
I liked a front rack mount across the rack so I could grab it quick if there was a coyote or groundhog pop up.
I'm the opposite. I don't like the cross-mount on the front because there are always branches tugging at the gun and I'm paranoid about it knocking my scope out of alignment. I like the ones where the muzzle is down by your right foot and the stock is on the right side near the rear rack. If I rode in wide open country I'd like what you describe better, but they make me nervous riding where I ride.
Unless it's a $29 Wal-Mart special a scope should hold zero from a few limbs hitting it. I've not had one lose zero yet from falling over or riding with them.
Agree, but it still makes me paranoid. I ride through some pretty nasty stuff in a couple places though. Sometime I feel like I'm going to get ripped off the bike.
Trim those trails up. Really if the bolts from riding don't knock them off a little limbs smacking it won't hurt.
I can see both points here, as I stated I don't want to damage my firearms with scrapes and scratches or worse from the ATV ride in. If a scope looses zero from the ride it, it's not the racks falt, it's mine for not having it mounted correct (scope to gun) or for buying a sub par scope. My gun dealer taught me to buy the best scope you can afford, he swore by Leopold scopes. He had a horse go down on him riding into Elk country, he bailed, but the gun was still in the leather scabbard as the horse rolled down the mountain. The rifle was thrown from the scabbard after the first roll. They ended up having to put the horse down, he optioned to stay at the trail while the others in his group went in to hunt for the day, and they where to pick him up on the way back to camp. Once sun was up he decided to check and see how far the scope was off, and was shocked to see it was still holding close to "zero". Funny part of this story was he bagged a 5x6 bull while waiting for the group to come back. Any way I am the type to protect my guns as well as possible, but I still want them in easy access. I would try fit and function of a scabbard before purchasing. Some are easy to use, some are down right frustrating to get open.
