Lots of options for the butt end bone, but what is there beyond bean soup? I got a big bone and the better half wants something other than navy bean soup. Suggestions?

Throw it into New Orleans style red beans and rice.

New here, don't know much about stoves, but I do know about Split Pea Soup. Excellent destination for a ham bone and all of the missed trimming on it.

Seems like it just naturally goes for split pea soup around these parts. But, navy bean soup sounds very good. Maybe I'll have to make that suggestion to 99 next time.

Welcome to FHC woma .... Well, you came to the right place if your looking for information on stoves. There's a few years of burning experience around here. Never had Split Pea Soup. Care to share the Recipe? Also if your into cooking check out the Smokehouse section (that's our cooking section...)

I like cooked down with potatoes and flat dumplins. We always called it pot pie growing up. Very simple recipe.

Boil potatoes, ham bone, salt and pepper to taste.

Make dumplins, flour, a little salt and enough water to make a rollable dough. Roll out and slice. Place dumplins in with boiling ham and taters.

I grew tired of pea soup myself.
The past few ham bones have become stock for Lentil soup.

If the dumplins don't come out flat they just take a little longer to cook. My great grandmother made the best I ever had, no real recipe of course. The key is the water to dumplin balance I believe.

There's always 13 bean soup. That's what my ham bone will be used for if it ever gets cold again.

I found it! I have made this before and it is very tasty. I think I will simmer the bone for a few hours and use the broth for boiling the veggies.

Thank you all for your suggestions, lots of good stuff. I will probably try some red beans and rice soon. Have a great night!

I had a boss that always added the Ham bone to his turkey soup. It was good that way.
