I've got Leupold VX-3's with the CDS on my 30/06, 25/06 and my wife's 7mm-08. Great scopes, love the CDS ( Custom Dial System ). So much easier to use than hold over reticles.

I like to dial if it's over 3 mil. Under that I'll hold over on the reticle.

I am not big on range shooting but have hunted mule deer in Montana for years with a Rem. 7MM ultra mag with a Leupold VX III 6X14 with a 50mm objective. Great scope for hunting out to 425 + yards for me. I have watched my partner take deer at 625 yards with a Leupold 6-24 with 50 mm mounted on the same gun 7MM ultra mag.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I will pass the info along. I've never owned a 7mm mag and appreciate the info :)

I was wondering about those Vortex scopes myself. As I have never heard of them and not really in the gun loop with new stuff.

I did buy a 3x9x40 matte scope the other day for 444 marlin to keep from pulling one off another gun. I found it funny in big red letters on front it said ASSEMBLED IN THE USA and in very tiny letters on back it said made in china.

Lots of the Pst and the Razor line of vortex on top of big name custom guns now at tactical competitions.

I'm a cheap azz so I'll never own that top stuff.
Now my bro I see him selling used scopes for $800 and up and I'm thinking o_O

Yeah those are nice to get out past 500 yards. Clarity is way better there.

I have a buddy that has no problem buying a $1500-2000 rifle but won't put good optic on it, he thinks the refurbished 3-9 from sportmen's guide $50 scope is great. I have to believe that you can't hit what you can't see, my rule of thumb is double the cost of the gun with optics. ($500 gun=$500+ optics) unless this is a brush beater, then that changes some things, but a good long range gun should be able to see what it is shooting at 400+ yds. High light, a kid's plastic telescope works great, get into low or cloudy light situations and that is when the money is worth it. That being said, I have a few Leupolds that I can't ever complain about.

Maybe another side of this is not just a good scope but good binoculars too. When I go out west, my gun is gonna have a good clear scope and I will have either Leica, Swarovski, or Leupold glasses around my neck
