Visited the Goose Island Oak, "Big Tree." 1969 Texas state champion costal live oak Quercus virginiana. Here's the specs: Trunk circumference: 35 feet 1.75 inches or 10.71 meters Average trunk diameter: 11 feet 2.25 inches or 3.41 meters Crown spread: 89 feet or 27.1 meters Height: 44 feet or 13.4 meters Age: In excess of 1,000 years.
Man, I didn't even think when I typed that. Gooder catch. Looked it up and that tree has been a gathering place to a LOT of people.
They have trimmed a lot of the lower branches, which reduces the trees resistance to high winds. They should leave the old tree untrimmed, in my opinion.
Aaaaah, what's up, doc? Big tree... looks like unseasoned primo farwood to me! Really tho, it's a majestic tree. Are those cables I see? Edit: Woodrat1276 beat me to it!
The mrs and i visited new orleans last year and I was amazed at the size if the live oaks there. They were massive!
most of these large trees need cabling or some type of support to hold up their large branches. Otherwise the weight or the wind will bring them down.
I want to visit the plantations...Oak Alley in particular. Those trees are really old. I heard 500 years
Cool post. Big venerable living things that outlast generations of people - I find it rather humbling. Imagine how much air it breathed and water it drank in its lifetime.
