I was eating a late lunch and looked at c/l and saw this 044, some what near where I live.

    https://northplatte.craigslist.org/tls/5194140865.html

called the guy asked a few questions, and then headed out the door immediately!!

He said he bought it new in the 90's to clean up some storm damaged trees, has not used it for a few years, he took to the local stihler last week and had them look it over and tune it so he could sell it, he sold his house and is cleaning out his garage..... didn't have a use for it anymore.

Came with 18" & 25" (wide nose) Stihl bars, 5 sharp chains, tool kit, and he still had the box from back when he bought it... (white towel was not included)

Doesn't the recoil cover say made in West Germany? It looks like it may. My 10 mm with a KS cyl says Germany and is 123xxxxx. KS cyl ?

    condition: excellent
    make / manufacturer: Stihl
    model name / number: 044

I purchased this saw new and it has only been used for my home use. Saw is in excellent condition, comes with 18" & 24" bars, 5 sharp chains, 3 splitting wedges, a bar cover and a small amount of bar oil.

I would have run too. Great deal. Congrats.

I've noticed a difference in the crankcases that seems to be a good indicator of whether an 044 is 10mm or 12. Look at the third picture. See the curved edge of the web in the case that runs from the upper-forward corner of the recoil down to the muffler-crankcase screw above the bar oil cap? That feature -- the curved web -- is present on 10mm cases. On 12mm 044's and MS440's, there is no curve; the edge of that gusset is a straight diagonal line.

The original 044's had a 10mm wrist pin. At some point it was re-engineered to a 12mm wrist pin, with accompanying changes to the cylinder and crankcase that supposedly increased horsepower but the 10mm version reputedly has quicker throttle response due to a slightly smaller crankcase volume. Pros and Cons to each, but the 10mm version with the Kolbenschmidt cylinder is the least common and thus the coolest.
