    Spent part of the morning removing a long dead ugly large Silver Maple from brother's front yard.It was pretty much toast & hardly worth getting,just wanted it gone finally.Neither him nor I wanted the wood,but his stepdaughter's boyfriend burns wood & so we left it for them.He burns a little in fireplace,had plenty of good dry dead Red/White Oak that I gave him in late October,plus a fair amount of dead Mulberry & Black Ash that needs cleaned up on his own 5 acres....

    What do I find when getting home an hour ago? A big dump trailer load of HUGE White Oak & Red Oak,in my backyard- some over 30 inches diameter - thanks to Nick & his crew at West Central Tree Service!!! They recently took down 2 dying trees less than 1/2 mile from me here in town,I seen the CL ad yesterday,went to the address & left them a message on voicemail.And here is the result...

    This is for winter 2018-19 & beyond.... :cool:

    Yup Nick places an ad every month or so when working here in metro area.Will deliver the raw unprocessed logs free if you live within 4-5 miles of where they're working.He lives about 45 minutes west in rural small town of 1500 or so,that's where his business is located.Normally charges $120 for a full sized p/u load (its a true half cord) cut to length,split,delivered & stacked to metro area.But is free when delivered in large pieces since he normally has to pay per ton to dump it at county landfill.Has told me in the past "that most homeowners want only the small,straight stuff that don't need split or is easier since they don't have the equipment to process the big stuff." Asked me in the past what size I want - I tell him,as big as you got! :cool:

    Its a win-win for both of us,everybody's happy. :tree::axe::thumbs:

    Guess what the odds are of anybody ever dropping off any oak like that in my backyard?

    Roughly 30% of the load was Red Oak,it was already cut to 14"-18" lengths,which I'm grateful.Much lower quality than the White,close to 1/2 of that will eventually be milled into slabs & blocks.The butt log wasn't too good,lots of cracks & a few softer spots,will be great fuel though.

    This morning moved the 16 month old Honey Locust & 3yr+ Mulberry from north fence to new spot south next to shed & the big stack of dry mostly Green Ash & White Pine.Then split the mega gnarly 30"+ Red Oak rounds & stacked them there.Only had to move everything about 40 ft,but I'm beat. Toughest Red Oak & biggest by far I've split in over 20 years....

    Is there a story behind that stool? Maybe a family history or was it a cheap find?

    Cant remember now whether it was a curbside find or was at some unforgotten auction thrown with some other junk for next to nothing, part of the seat was broke so I cut out a scrap of 3/4" treated plywood & screwed that to the top.Its been sitting outside for several years.The squirrels use it more than I do anymore.
