The phone was quiet again this morning. Hope this doesn't continue or I may have to start the desk job earlier than expected. There are advantages to an hour or two to kill. I checked my usual scrounge holes and got lucky on the second stop: There were a load of larger logs, 30"+, but I did not want to work too hard so I bucked some of the branches. If I get an early start tomorrow I may go back with the ramps... KaptJaq
Yes, those were the branches. Anything 6" and under goes into the chipper. Yes there are free wood chips also. The highway department is widening a road and had to remove the trees that have lined the road, some since before the civil war. It was sad to see the trees cut down but I will be warm in their memory in a couple of years. The smallest trunk there was a silver maple that was a little over 30". Some of the trunks were over 4'. If I go back tomorrow I'll try to take a picture... (Sign says no cameras so I'll have to use my phone.) KaptJaq
As promised, some pictures... The really clean stuff is starting to disappear but here is what is left on the trunk pile... Behind me as I took this picture is the "branch" pile. The red oak in the picture above (2nd from the right) is an 8' section from the middle of the tree. There is another 8' section from the bottom of the tree behind the pile. The next section up, from above the first split, is in the truck below: I should have topped the load off with rounds from the other side of the split but it got hot fast so I quit early. They start the next section of the road sometime next week so I'm sure there will be more to choose from. KaptJaq
So, do you make these desks out of scrounged wood? Seriously, good work on that haul. That 'not-as-clean' stuff looks good to me...
