Hey guys and gals, picked up a 20 ton log splitter off of Craigslist today, it a yard machine, not sure how old, but it's in decent shape and works well. 400$ for it, I wish I got it a little cheaper , but I needed one and there was no way I was buying new. I thought about building one, but still, I don't think I could have built one for 400$. The guy I bought it from bought it new, and he had to be 90 yrs old.. He Also had a couple chainsaws (Stihl) in his shed, I tried to get him to sell, but nothing doing. Only thing I need to do to it is get one tire inflated or replaced. And I want to add some sort of cage to hold and catch the logs. I'll throw a picture of a couple stacks in there as well.. Lol
That's basically an older version of my parents mtd splitter. 400 is fair really. The old didier my buddy bought from a friend was 200, and that's as old as I am, and low, and only horizontal.
She was trying to get 450$ and I wasn't paying that, I tried to get it for 350$. She said 400, I said if it runs and splits I'll do 400.. And she threw in hydraulic fluid, which kind of made me think there was something leaking. It seems to have plenty of power, and almost broke my toes when a tough piece of cherry popped and went flying!!!
Thanks, I know, I was going to drive 120 miles last week to get one that was homemade that needed work, for 350.. So I figured this was a decent deal
That's a good price there man, you will like it. I paid 700 for my Huskee 22, less than 2 years old. People are crazy trying to sell their 5 year old 22 ton splitters for 900 bucks
Looks like a great deal ! I will offer there are two major reasons a splitter will send wood "flying". Air in the compression side of the cylinder and frame flex. Air in the cylinder is usually caused by low level of hydraulic oil, I have to really watch how level my unit is set up. Just something to consider.
Hey thanks, I just thought it was that the wood was so damm tough , some of this stuff for some reason is like iron.. But that's a good point, I need to check all the levels tomorrow , it looks like it desperately needs an oil change.
Changing the oil, you're in luck I just did that here's some information for ya http://firewoodhoardersclub.com/for...draulic-oil-on-splitter-need-some-info.12563/
Well Horkn I'm glad you're vertical but we all know that's no way to split-and WoodovenAT I think thats a pretty fair deal if the motors sound and it sure sounds like it...Enjoy
Don't know how the splitter head rides along the beam on yours, but on my Champion(Lowe's) 22T, if I'm not careful, some logs will wedge down low, and when it pops, I usually end up taking a shot to the knuts !
Then ya got Ashwatcher- who apparently goes BOTH ways..... with his splitter.... Whatcha think I meant
Thats so true Eric VW I've often thought thats gonna happen to me-think about wearing a cup like when I was playing baseball-so far it hasnt happened but a good shot to the nads avoided is likely a good investment-and WoodovenAT that rust on the beam will go away quickly with a lil grease-I personally do a thin coating of spray white lithium before each session, just makes it smoother...JMO
I didn't think a cup was necessary PPE for making firewood.. I guess that's one benefit of the old didier splitter. It's so low there's no possible nad trauma.
