This may prove to be a mistake tonight. I usually get better heat in an N/S orientation, but it is what it is. -14 and dropping outside.
Loaded a full load of Aspen 1/2 hour ago, we'll see how it does over the next 8 hrs.

Yup, still had half a firebox this morning, and the wife opened up the stat, so I had to shut it down for a reload. There wasn't enough to carry it through the day from the nights load.

You were just "teasing us" !
you knew it would make the night just fine :)

I found E/W burns a bit slower, not sure why
A smaller load, E/W is a good shoulder season trick ;)

;)Kinda, but not really. When I loaded it last night, I thought the wife was home today, forgot she'd be out of the house. The E/W burns last longer and when she got up this morning, she opened the stat and the stove top was 500 when I came down. But, not enough wood remaining to carry the fire until tonight when I get home.
So I had to shut it down until the cat dropped to 800, then a real quick reload.
Darn things just burn too long, shoot!

Webby had a good post about that on the other site. He got 50 hours on a low burn with the Ashford.

I talked to Woodstock about using the eco bricks and they said that as long as they dont have any filler or wax they should be fine in the stove. I bought some at TSC just to see how they work I havent used them yet but well see.

What kind of burn times do you get when you load it with just the eco bricks and how does your stove act with them? Ive thought about buying a bunch of them for backup just in case.

Sounds like my homemade starters won't be usable in the stove I plan to get.

First time I have burned that many, but it's looking like around 36 hours. That's pretty close to what I would get out of 126 lbs of cordwood.

They were actually packed in a bit too tightly. I had to spread some of them out so it would take off. The first 12 hours or so were pretty much cat-only. The firebox was completely dark, stove top about 550 over the cat for most of it.

The last 12 have been pretty impressive. The cat has been on the edge of inactive, since there really isn't any smoke left. The stove top has been rock steady at 400, but the house is actually a degree or two warmer, while the outside temp is almost ten degrees cooler. I think because the whole stove is hot, not just that spot over the cat.

If you load a bunch of these, make a pretty tight stack of them, but leave room around the stack. They expand quite a bit as they start to burn.

I have burned some before, so I knew what to expect out of my stove. These things are very dry, and could take off pretty easily, especially in a secondary tube stove. What I'm saying is don't stuff it full the first time you burn them. Ease into it, until you know how your stove will act.

I really just wanted to see how much I could fit in there, inspired by a thread someplace else. I could have easily fit two more packs, or 42lbs.

Interesting. I'm going to try the North Idaho Energy Logs when they get here. I floated the idea of becoming a dealer to the boss since they don't have any Colorado dealers. They're sending me half a dozen to try. We'll see.....

I hate running e/w unless i don't need a lot of heat. Otherwise, I can't get enough in to stay on 24 hour burn cycles.

Thanks for posting this Jeff. I've been looking for a way to make things easier for my wife while I'm traveling for extended periods over the coming months. $300/ton out the door from TSC here. Not cheap but probably not a bad solution for when I can't be around to run the stove hard.
