I agree with all the above.....ms 461 or dolmar 7910...maybe a husky 372xp if your not wanting to pull a 28" all the time. Have fun with the hunt.

Sell that rancher and there is like $300 toward your new 460!

How do you carry firewood without a truck? Must drag it with tractor to pile?

OK I need a new saw.:D this is not bad news, but since I literally know nothing about them, I will go new because I would not know a good deal if it bit me. Johnny was easy a year old 2nd from biggest made in that year. the original owner had a stroke girl I bought it from took $100 deposit brought to my small engine guy he gave it tune up and offered me $300 on spot.

So my option are what Stihl, MS 461 or do I need a 661. a dolmar 7900 what would husky make?

I want a solid work horse meaning a Chevy not a Lamborghini. I really appreciate all the advice and am amazed at the generosity of people on this site. thank you. :handshake:

If all you want to pull is a 28" bar the stihl 441 or 461 would be fine. Unless your cutting big wood like that all the time the 661/2 is overkill.

Husky makes the 372xp which compares to the 441 they also make the 576 which is sized like the 461.

I would honestly look at the 372 husky or 441/2 stihl if you just have a few trees. Let it wear the big bar now then drop back to a 20 or 25" bar. If your cutting huge wood like that often step up to something like the 460/1/2 or just if you want it.

You won't go wrong with any of the saws that are listed above. Everyone has there preferences. Some like the new auto tune saws like the 441,661,576. Others like the standard carb 440,460,461,372,660,7910. Pick what's comfortable and you like. If you lived closer I would tell you to come on by and play. I have about 75% of those saws in the shop right now. Lol.

yup, drag with tractor or little 4x8, trailer pulled behind car or tractor. most of wood comes from hedgerows farmer next door did one for him cause I cleaned up so nice, what farmer wants brush in crop rows he let's me take big stuff, he burns but he says anything or 16 inches is too much work.

yeah, because of advice I am leaning towards stihl 461 or equivalent size and should I get it ported. millermodsaw took time to explain it too me so at least I understand what it is. I need 2 saws in case I get 1 stuck so a 75cc, for big stuff and 2 good 50cc, for regular. then of course a backup the 455 rancher for now I might be coming down with CAD:doh::dex:

For 95% of firewood guys a 70cc saw is as big as they will ever need especially if its mid 70cc like the 461.

7900, 460, 461, 440, or 372 would be a great buy. Any of them are great saws!

Sorry to hear about your other saw.. And I agree with the others about selling the Rancher and putting the money towards the 70 cc saw you will be purchasing. The Classified section here is a good place to sell a saw.

Well I can only speak of the first pro saw that I have Owend and that's the 441cm thus far has been a real runner for me. But there are several others here with better experience with pro saws and it looks like they are giving good advice already

yeah I tried a 461 after we talked I like it. :saw: I want to try dolmar, next cause I will keep this thing til it dies so i really want to like it. I guess I've been spoiled I only had pro saws . i didnt know! that's why I rented that jonsered, it wasn't and I did not like it. so I have to reconsider everyone advice about that 455 rancher. but sell something I'm a hoarder, keep it til it dies. I buy stuff when too good of a deal comes buy somebody need $ for Christmas or taxes. that will take some thinking.
