Drove the trail this morning, trying to decide on the next victim. Would it be the double Maple, with one section beginning a bad spot on the lower portion? Kept on the trail to the end of the property and decided on a hickory on the creek bank. Decided that the roots would give up sometime. Got some bucked, split and stacked before dad came to visit. Wind was blowing today, and it fell a bit left, and hung up. Tractor pulled it out, no prob.

Looked at the outside thermometer after you posted. It is 77 in East Tennessee right now. Cold and snow 3 weeks ago, then the mud. It will get cold again before we get summer (hot & humid). I have lived in East Tennessee all my life, and will for the rest of my life. Recommend it if you can take the humidity in the summer. No State income tax to boot.
well I just looked at thermometers it's 26 and snowin. we get hot and humid lake champlain 100 plus miles long upto 15 wide less than mile west of of me so summer read last 2 weeks July first week of august goes 90 degrees 90 humidity. I imagine much hotter than that I go inside or pool afternoon. I guess it's like 30 below ya don't go out much more than ya have to! state income is 6% but property tax is a killer town appraise property at 275k tax is 4400 a year. Uncle got 15 acres kentucky power well septic no house yet 65 dollars a year. dad got a camp 2 car garage 30 acres no well power septic 1600 a year. it's all for schools don't get me wrong we got great schools but my property taxes doubled last 10 years and my income didnt!

HOLY CHIT!!! My 51 acres (with two houses) is appraised at $260,200 (looking at my tax receipt). Note that the land is on what they call the Greenbelt, so it is taxed at a lowet rate. 2014 tax bill was $1,645.00.. You gotta get out of that place!!!!
You haven't heard best part. I am a land lord, my rate on my personal house they call, primary residence, at 4400 a year is cheap if I rented this house out it would be over 7,000. a year. Then governor asks a group of landlords why rents are so high I am like . I won't say any more cause I don't want to be vaporized or political
For some reason, I didn't seem to lose any trees, but the bulk of the pines have been down years before I bought the place.
I've only got 1 acre, and my house/ land appraisal is right about where yours is. Our taxes are just under twice of what yours are. Wisconsin has horrible taxes. Always in the top 5 worst states for taxes.
According to the charts maple is about 23 MBTU and hickory is a little over 25. Maple has never really lived up to that IMO...but hickory seems a little under-rated. There's just something about the smell of working up hickory tree too.
OK the log rack lists it as 29 and forestry lists as 24.4MBTU which chart should I be using? ok I agree on smell..
No idea which is better or if any of them are correct. I wouldn't worry about it...just burn it and see which one you like better.
Sugar smells like vanilla. Around here, there is a LOT more sugar around. I try to cosset my hickory. If it isn't dead, and down or a threat because of location, it isn't being burned. Hickory is dense and makes great firewood, but maple does a nice job too, and has beautiful flames. Green and blue. And I love the smell. Every once in a while, the house smells like vanilla.
