Great, as long as you never want to take any time off. Count on staying awake for periods up to 30 hrs, working nights and days, missing your kids birthdays and games, missing holidays, etc. They do pay excellent and super benefits. All I can tell you is it will be totally different than anything you have ever done. If they offer you a job, go for it. You can always quit if you don't care for the lifestyle. Good luck!

I know three friends that already retired from the job I'm looking to retire from, they're conductors and from what I hear they work 8-5pm?

They must have the seniority to hold yard\switch jobs. I'm a second generation railroader and am only speaking from my own experiences. Hours can vary but if you work on the road(away from home terminal), expect to work 12 hr tours at various times of the day.

I had a neighbor that retired from a RR company, he has an outstanding pension.

If I retire from my current position I'd draw my law enforcement retirement, I only want to work 10 more years and I'd have to pay into the railroad pension. Not sure what those numbers look like.
