Once in a while I'll find oak. There's been a lot off silver maple lately. Pine always sticks around there because everyone's afraid to burn it because of the myths, i grab it all the time! I've found a couple loads of ash. It's a crapshoot. But i got the boiler so long as it's dry i burn it!
I get as much as I can from old logging sites and also a logging yard that usually gives us a better price. Last year, just about $92 a cord delivered (eight foot logs). The first year, about 6 years ago, it was $50 a cord!
Where abouts is that? My main wood dump is menomonie but i have another that hasn't produced since i heard of it in knapp. I'll wait till spring when everyone starts cleaning up there yards
1. The yard is only a few miles away. Usually quoted one price for wood and then I say "Seeing as how close I am, we can shave that down delivery fee a bit, no?" Works so far. 2. The business sells to larger mills. There are usually "cull" logs that are set aside and then sold. 3. Always pay within a week or so...sometimes, no bill is made out....get it? I heard from one driver that this year, prices will be way up. Last year, people wee paying as much as $120 a cord. Most drivers/loggers were charging around $110, but there was a wait. So, if prices increase a lot, you'll be able to read about it on this site!!!!
Yup it is amazing how quickly things get done when the long green starts coming out. Dunno if no one up here pays in cash or what. But every time I am dealing with some one and they start him hawing, i pull that big wad of green out and suddenly they become much more agreeable...
If you want a lot of wood. Logging sites is the place to go. This pile of cut offs is mine. I did some field work cutting trees for the landowner. Plus I know the loggers. The cut offs are mine. Loading a 40 yard container. I am getting the 288 XP Lite for the big ones tomorrow.
Mine is literally about 2 miles from my back door. Works slick. Spring and fall bring loads of free wood, as long as you're not picky.
The dump i go to is 7miles one way but when it's so easy one can't afford not to cut there! The guy who runs it is a little funny lets us run all this dangerous equipment chainsaws trucks and tractors but you climb one pile and he yells at ya because they don't want anyone getting hurt. Hello? Big scary chainsaws won't mess someone up worse than a twisted ankle? Lol. I just stay off the piles and cut what's easily reachable. I don't want to be the guy to ruin it for everyone
Haha that's awesome. I've never been told if we can or can't take from the city pile. I figure asking forgiveness will be easier than permission at this point. It's no secret in town where the woodpiles are.
