Unfortunately had to go into work for a few minutes this morning. Now on a late start. This Ash is a good size. Took me a while to limb it up and then clear the branches off the trail. All diced now, it will provide a decent amount of wood. I'm going after the B300 to do the lifting, hauling, and then dumping.
Good stuff there, Gassy! Speaking of wood before the storm, I brought my first big load of wood into the basement last night, around two weeks' worth.......just in time for the precipitation to start. Its coming down pretty good right now!
Thanks guys. Appreciated. Unfortunately the temps came up here. That makes the top of the ground softer. So I have to be careful where I go with the Bobcat. Loads 1,2,3 & 4.
This work makes me hungry. That bagel and cream cheese at 6 isn't cutting it. A light lunch, then back at it. Three salami sandiches with mouse turd, some chips and water.
Those loader make life so much easier. Nice handling size Ash you got. Should make some nice firewood.
Took two more small Ash. Three more heaping buckets. But this bigger Ash is going to be tough to get out before it's too late. Good thing the Bobcat has lights on the front and back!
You are making serious headway on future BTUs. Nice pictures & some nice wood. Some say the notch wedge thickness should be 1/2 the diameter to keep the hinge working till the tree is almost on the ground so the tree don't stump jump.
Good info Dave. I did not end up where I wanted with my cut. But the tree fell very close to where I wanted it. But, I had to leave the prize in the woods. The trunk of that Ash is nice and straight. So straight I decided to leave it as long as I could. I hated to cut it! So I didn't. It is about 18" at its smaller end. And I left it 18.5 feet long!
Gas, those are some nice sized ash. Love to cut those but we've only a very few left then we have to move on to the little ones that we've been avoiding.
I have not decided, but I thought about how straight it is for the length of over 18' and decided before I cut it I am going to see if there is anyone I know that may be able to use it. And/or see if I can get some money for it. There are quite a few Amish saw mills around here as well. I also thought about the fact that some day I want to open up my basement by removing a wall between the old living room and bedroom that are down there. Make one large room out of it. It would be cool to make the beam out of that thing! I could make a couple of beams out of it. Nice long ones! Could make a lot of nice things out of it. I will think on it for a while. The temps had warmed up enough that I did not want to go back into that area off the road where the stump was. No need in taking the chance or of tearing everything up. I will retrieve it though. I may go back with the Ford tractor and see if I can get a chain around one end of it and lift one end with the three point hitch and drag it out. But if we get to much snow, that won't be happening.
Dennis. It was tough to decide if I should cut this or not. That is how nice of a tree it was, because the trunk was so straight for so high up. But I made the decision to cut it because the EAB will probably kill it anyway. Might as well take it while it is in good shape. I have some areas that have a lot of those little ones all together. I go in and thin them out. They make for easy handling and processing. I'm talking about 6-16" or so. I try to take the bigger guys and leave the smaller ones as well.
Impressed with all your energy. Do you often work outside after dark? If you are able to save and use some of your own lumber, it will have a special meaning to you and your family. Hard for me to do much of anything after dinner. (We call it supper around here). Chat on the computer, watch Fox for a while. We had this snow storm on the way and I wanted to push to try to get as much wood out as I could before the snow. The lights on the Bobcat are very helpful. This is my first winter with it. I used it to plow this morning and the lights really lit the area up great. Lights out front and out back and put the flashers on and I can be seen for a long friggin way when I am near the road. If you are able to save and use some of your own lumber, it will have a special meaning to you and your family. This is exactly what I was thinking when thinking of that beam or two of them in the basement eventually. How cool wood that be if I made the beam and the post for each end out of that tree? And installed them when I did the remodel on the basement a few years from now. I would have to figure out how to get it to a saw mill, or have someone do it for me here on my property. I waited until I was all done working and got the plow on the Bobcat, then came in and got cleaned up and ate about 7. I remember some guys from down south use to tell me that I was using those words wrong. Dinner/Supper. I thought they were the same thing. Always were interchangeable here at our house. Most of the time we called it supper. They told me that dinner was lunch time. Supper is, well, supper time. About 5ish. I use to say. Dinner? That is lunch. 12ish. What the hell are you guys talking about? LOFL Ja. The food posted here looks great! It is not great on the size of my stomach though. I usually end up getting hungry looking at the pictures of it and then have a snack. Or a beer and a snack.
