So my neighbor had 5 or 6 large trees cut down yesterday. I believe they were all maple but am not sure. Lots and lots of cords there though. The tree co. came in with a rather large crane, big enough to take fairly tall wood over the top of a 2 story house and place it in trucks, and a large bucket truck. Very slick, very professional and great to watch- they probably had 6 or 7 guys there all whittling away very quickly and safely. And now for the funny part: that is the same tree company where I buy my firewood. Yep, some of my neighbor's wood (Easy Boys!) might end up in next years' Holz Hausens. Brian
Ask for a discount. It was VERY noisy, and the obscene amount of dust has triggered your inner lawyer and killed your cabbage seedlings. (just kidding)
Why didn't you go there and offer to buy them lunch for all the wood? Or even a 100$ bill. Most of those guys would jump at that
That company processes firewood for sale, when the cut down trees, they just bring the wood to the processing place. The owner of the co. was not there and I would not do an end run around him with his employees. This is a good sized company, not a 2 or 3 guy operation, and they have a good deal of land they process and store firewood on. I have tried to buy 20 foot trunk wood from him (and others) but they really do not want to sell it that way as they are set up for firewood processing and so will only knock about 15% off the price of cut / split / delivered wood and I cannot possibly cut and split it myself for that amount of money. It was tempting to steal some though- I am sure I could have put one of those 30" rounds that was 20 feet long into my pocket and made off without them noticing.... Brian
I wonder if the customer gets a break if the tree company leaves the wood and just provides the service and not haul the logs out? We know some of the tree companies like yours BDF turn the hardwood into firewood and make money x2.
Funny thing but I asked my neighbor exactly that: was there a charge for removing the wood? He did not know because he only got a price on cutting down the trees and the full clean- up, all the brush and useful wood removed. But to be honest, those people are super- neat freaks and even if he gave me the wood, I could not cut it up fast enough and remove it without annoying him. I am not criticizing those folks- they are great neighbors and their property is immaculate, but there is no doubt they wanted all the wood and any mess gone by the end of the day. In the end it just would not be worth the hard feelings that I believe would result in me getting free wood (it would not be free if it caused a squabble anyway). Brian
Understood, knowing your neighbors and what long term issues that could arise from something as simple as this goes a long way. You know the tree guys knew what day it was, I'm sure the sales guy that quoted the work saw 6 cords of firewood coming back at them later on. And for all I know, the sales guy is also getting a cut on that as well.
It would have been nice to take some videos of that operation. I wonder what they use for a processor at their place?
The crane guys are fun to watch. About 15 years ago my neighbor behind me had a similar operation taking down his trees. I asked for the wood, he said sure and that evening one of his guys backed the truck down my driveway and unloaded the logs from that job and more. He's been my prime source ever since.
Some definitely do in the DC Metro area. All of the scrounges I've done there the owners remarked at how it saved them a ton. All were cut to length and stacked neatly which tells me it saved them and the tree company a lot of cash.
