Last weekend my son went into the woods with me to cut a load. He's 9, so I don't let him near the saw yet, but he was able to help roll some of the rounds and carry some of the pieces after I split to the truck. It made the whole experience much more enjoyable, and he was happy because he was with me (and I added a bit to his allowance for the help). On the way back we saw a couple of other people cutting wood and I wondered aloud if they were burning that this winter. This prompted him to question why that matters, and then I went on a bit of a rant about how wood needs years to dry properly. I thought I had kind of lost him, but then he said "Oh, so that's why you're 4 years ahead." I don't know if that made any impression, but it was good to be together anyway. He's said he wants to go cutting with me again.
Always a good experience being out with your son. I'm also happy the experience was engaging enough that he was interested in the wood itself, knowing that you were 4 years ahead and not burning recently (green) cut wood. Moments like this are great teaching times, good for you!
Thats awesome. You've got him fully engaged. He's doing the work, learning the routine, but he's also thinking about the whole process, not just "put this log in the truck" Those are the lessons that mold us, you and him! Keep up the good work, both of you!
Great work Father & Son, making memories and getting it done! To be passed down to future generations.
He's obviously been paying attention. Tell him we said "gooder job". What a cool way to spend the day.
Awesome! I think that's about the age I started helping my dad. Making some lifetime memories and training the next generation of wood burners! Had some help from my youngest nephew yesterday. He's only 5 but he likes helping with the firewood. He managed to roll some smaller rounds to the trailer, but he couldn't lift them.
