Glad to hear your OK! I am the opposite, have 02 Dakota quad v8, love the hell out of it. I never bought and never will buy a foreign car. I also have a Caddy with Northstar, love that one. My caveat is the wife has a xc70, but it was owned by ford at the time. :)

While I'm sure the rinsing helps, GM had major issues with full size SUVs and pick-ups predominantly between 1999 and 2003. To the point it was researched by NHTSA, many articles online. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/08/a...ver-brake-line-problem.html?ref=business&_r=1

While you expect the rubber parts of a brake system to be wear items, the hard lines should typically outlast the vehicle. And they certainly shouldn't need to be replaced before the soft parts. I'll be the first to admit I'm not washing the bottom of my vehicles, but no other vehicle I've owned, all in the "salt belt" have ever had lines rust badly.

I've been wrenching in the salt belt my entire life. Mostly on domestic vehicles and I've seen them all rot out the steel lines, being brake or fuel, etc..

I'm a car wash whore. the kid who takes the money and mops the bumpers with pre-soak knows my name and both of my cars and know what i 'order' for the wash option for both (i do the ultimate with tire shine on the car, and a more basic wash on the truck). I go through it at least once a week in the summer, and after every salting in the winter.... sometimes more.

I got the car back today. It looks good, but it has rattles now :/ lame

My truck is still up in the air. They have quoted a significant price to fix the brakes before they will even touch the body work. And since that was pre-accident, it's on my pocket. I'm most likely going to take the cash from ins, and tow the truck home, and put it on cl for parts/mechanic special. engine/tranny are all good condition, only 91k miles too. should be able to get 500-1500 out of it i think (i'll start high and work my way down... lol).

Frankly, ins is paying for the damage way more than i thought the truck was ever worth.

the irony of all this is that just a couple weeks ago I was thinking about saving $10 a month and pulling full coverage from the truck. Glad I'm a bit lazy and didn't get around to it ... lol

So, no go on the truck. I'm taking the payout for the repairs, less deductible as cash. The body shop made an offer to buy the truck off me as a lot vehicle. offered me $800 + no fee for the tear down ($150 since i'm not getting the work done there, otherwise included), and i don't have to pay to tow it home, or deal with a vehicle that has no brakes on my steep azz drive way, or CL people wanting to test drive a vehicle with no brakes.... lol So, it's about $1000 value in to me with that offer and 0 hassel, so i'm bringing them the title in the morning. and, ins is paying out about 4100 bucks, they waived $100 on my deductible for some minor fender stuff that i ssaid don't bother with (the truck is FAR from mint... not worth fixing a small ding) so i'm getting about 3200 from ins cash, + the 800 so about 4k in my pocket.
VS, paying about 1000 to get the brakes fixed, plus 1000 for my deductible... the 2 grand isn't worth it when i couldn't sell it for 3k before the crash probably anyway (rusted out tail gate, exhaust manifold leaking, cig burns on interior (prev owner), etc etc etc). So i'm pretty happy with walking with 4k.

that pays off my car completely (what i owe, plus my dedictible that i had to front until the other guys ins pays up) and leaves a little left for xmass spending.

And you didn't get any recall for the frame rotting away? They almost all do.

Not so sure I'd be that enthusiastic. They did a recall on late 90's models too and replaced frames or bought the trucks back. I have a friend at work that has an '06 model.....guess what? Yep, frame rotted and getting replaced. Now, wouldn't ya think they'd figure out how to keep that from happening by now (15yrs+)????

As for my choice if I was buying now, it would be either a Ford F-150 or Chevy/GMC 1/2 ton. I drive 'em both often at work, both very nice trucks. I can get a BIG discount (20%) on a Ford if I buy a new one........usually cheaper that a "pre-owned".

Supposed to come back with the Ranger next year. Might already be too late as many have already moved to yota and may not come back.

All my fishing buds have the Tacoma's. and all seem happy Nice trucks, But I still love my Ford.

Last I heard the original was junk. This is supposed to be better? What kind of a price tag does it have?
