Here's one I did on my 359 with a homemade deflector and some stainless screen...

Thanks, it was only on tank #2 in that vid since the rebuild/port work, it seemed to come alive after a few more tanks put through it.

A Dremel or similar grinder and you can do your own muffler mod. For around $10 you can get the husky 288 deflector. If you don't need screen it can be a simple as cutting slits in and bending it up.

In general, a good port job can get you 40% over stock.
There are exceptions, but in general it has been shown that a port job reduces cut times by about 40%

Not sure about the gains from a 441 port job ................. being an M-Tronic, they are pretty strong right out of the box

Was the OP asking about getting his saw "woods ported" or just doing a muffler mod by adding a second port to his muffler?

A muffler mod is basically opening up the outlet on the muffler to match the flow of the exhaust port on the cylinder. Obviously some saws respond better than others. Newer saws tend to be more choked up and will typically benefit more... Like Dex said, you might see a 10% gain, and the cost is typically just a few dollars.

I have an 044 and an Ms440. The outlet on the 044 muffler is probably close to 3/4" diameter, the outlet on the MS440 is about 5/16". The 440 should see more gains over the stock configuration than the 044.

I guess,, yes,, he was only asking about a DP muffler for his 441, I let my enthusiasm get the best of me and kind of derail the thread talking about my ported 441. At-least I kept the thread on a topic of a 441 :) :)

If all you want is a muffler mod, just take the muffler off and send it to me.
We can work the details out.

    Yup ............
Check out Terry Landrum or Masterminds video channel ........ time them for yourself.
My own saw (044), with me porting it picked up just over 35% in timed cuts with the same chain in the same wood. I am sure I could lean it out some more and get my 40%, but its a work saw, and I want it to work for me for the rest of my life, so she stays a little on the rich side.

30-35% was the norm a few years ago. I saw that 40% and wasn't sure if it was overly optimistic or not.

I thought we were talking muffler modd and he then threw in a port job on a 660.

Some saws see an easy 30-40% on just a muffler modd. The saw in question I do not have so I think Dex and others have a better idea. I do think 10% seems low but again I do not have the saw.

    What 660?

30%-40% on a muffler mod alone? I don't think is possible. 10% is pretty good (and being generous on some models).

A woods port is around 30%-40%. But that also comes with an opened up exhaust.

a lot of folks think because its louder it makes more power. most saws even choked up epa models don't get 10% on muffler mod alone.

40% on a port (which includes a muffler mod) is still optimistic with the research i've done.. more realistic is 25-30% for most saws, but port also means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. A cut squish, cut base and domed piston isn't a regular woods port. that obviously makes more power than a widening of ports, deleting base gasket and increasing port and transfer timing..

The machine work has become normal for a woods port any more.

ok cool, thats where I've been out of the loop the last couple years I've been MIA. at the time, those were cheater saws at the gtg's. and most optimistic % numbers included a non work chain....
