I dug up some dirt and top soil from both sides of the trail in this wet section. Everything going good until I tried to spread it. Can't get enough traction to back drag or push and level it. Dam. Oh well, I should have known, it's coming out of a wet section, it's going to be wet. I'll have to let it set and dry out. The sun hitting it while I'm working it doesn't help. It starts unthawing and turns to muck. Time to move to another area and do some work elsewhere. Beautiful day! The Bota got her feet dirty!

Yep... that freezin' n thawin' thing is a real pain isn't it? Had my pickup in 4x4, at the cabin a few years back, in that slimy crud. Truck just sat there, made slicks for tires with the treads full of muck, then started sliding downhill. Not fun. At least you had your bucket to help you get out.

Wait for it to dry out and freeze up again, drag it with the York rake to break it up, keep driving over it with tractor. I'll get it, it may just take some time. Lots of reasons for it. It is mostly topsoil and clay, so not very easy to spread. Then when it starts to unfreeze, yuk.

Nope. It's just a trail that is mostly used for walking. But I need to get it in better shape for the tractor and maybe in the future for a side by side. Need to get several sections like this filled in. Or divert trail around to a higher ground. This may be easier in some areas.

Ha. Thought about that post and realized I said topsoil and clay. The "topsoil" is a sod of clay and weeds! It doesn't like to break up and spread out very well. P.I.A.

Well I made a little more headway this afternoon. I was able to use the hoe and break some of that up for a section of about 20 ft. or so maybe. I just kept breaking it up by digging at it and then swinging the hoe through it from side to side and hitting it with the teeth. I then could back drag it a little. I found some dryer sandy soil up on the hill by the camp and brought about 5 bucket loads down and mixed that into the area I was working. Now I'm just hoping I can continue through the rest of it like that. Still another 40 feet of the clay/muck though. I think I will get some time tomorrow.

LOL Yes, yes it does. And it IS nasty! Believe or not though, there is enough clay in it. So when you get it where you want it, then pack it down and level it out, it is decent for a trail. Once you get the grass and weeds to grow in thick it gets pretty stable. The problem is trying to get it broken up so you can spread it and level it. It's kinda like trying to take beer from pellet heads in the Firewood Hoarders Club!

I like how it sticks to the tires. Must make traction, propulsion and steering interesting.

LOL. I have lots of pine needles in these woods. But if I put a bunch of them down on the trail the grass and weeds won't grow in on the path. Right? I don't know if that would make it as sturdy as the grass and weeds would once they grow in good and thick. I don't know. There are spots on the trail that have good grass and weeds but can get nasty even so. But those are spots that are too low as well. :picard:Just too many low spots on this property.
