Pretty close on just the wood(aromatic & slightly nutty just like Fat Bastards #2 made into coffee) - smoke smell will be different same as the visual;)
You have black walnut and hickory - no need to fight it(sarcasm font needed)

Went out and grabbed a sample from both and brought them in and got each smoking with the torch. Both smell the same, and it sure smells like black walnut husks in here now.

I have had the pleasure of burning black walnut before. It sure looks like black walnut to me. Looks very much like what I cut down and burned. I do wish I knew what it was before hand tho. You can get some good money for that wood if the trunk is long and straight. Hey....that's what she said!!

Yup there can be decent money in Black Walnut that's just 'firewood' to some people.Sept 201o got almost 3 p/u loads of it from free CL score barely 4 blocks from home.A big storm in June 2010 apparently brought it down.2 full loads of fuel - remainder of the bigger stuff 14"-20" was cut into blocks/slabs for future woodturning/other projects.Kept a bunch for my own use but also sold $200 worth not long afterwards....

Nice thistle!!! There aren't many of them (black walnut) in my area. If memory serves, it wasn't a bad burning wood. Not too much in smoke department and heat was good. I believe there is much better wood to be used then BW. Lots of cherry in my area. Heck I have a 3 1/2 cord wild cherry in my backyard that the wife won't let me take down........yet!!!
