Last weekend I got out and managed to toss some elm in the truck Got it all split and stacked, not much but I'll be back out hunting wood this weekend. First elm in my inventory - I'm guessing red/slippery by the intense heartwood and bright white ring of sapwood.
The 27 ton handled it quite nicely, would not have wanted to split it by hand. And thanks for the compliment, that's the old man's. We took a cruise in that since I had mine on the lift at the time.
Oh I see your avatar now, looks like mine is the generation between yours. '86, this pic is about 5 years old now right after I got the plow setup and painted
is that what elm looks like? i have some rounds at home with similar bark, real thick, kinda cragy. Found the log in a stump dump after a storm this summer. Heavy as hell! Hit a small round with the maul, it went *thunk* and barely left a dent. I tossed them to the side. Noodled one last night with my 455 to reseat the clutch after some maintenance. Some of the heart wood noodles had a red tint. I will get some pictures and post them up.
Could be, pics will help, The heartwood in elm is very reddish and dark, also, once you split it give it a sniff, very strange sour smell, similar to red oak but more intense.
Nice truck! Yes, you're correct, you've bridged the generation gap haha, mine is the 88-91 gen, 91 to be exact. Just finished up my new steering setup and tossed my 37's on. Replaced all the incandescents in the instrument cluster with LED's too. So that was my last escapade in the garage, next up is the locker and re-gear. Sorry to delve into that topic but I never get sick of truck talk.
That truck looks like a work horse! Where do you do your wood hunting at? I noticed a couple of your pics seem to be along a dirt road/trail. You or you family have land or access to a wood lot?
I used to have access to a friend's woodlot but he since sold the land. Now I'm left to scrounge and occasionally cut on state land.
