Have you continued this practice of small "hot" fires, loading little bits of wood at a time, more often? Did you notice a shortened cat life by doing so? This is my first cat stove, so I'm still on the learning curve. Everything just seems to be cleaner when the fire is hot, the firebox walls, the glass, literally everything. Sure, it works on low and slow, but, the glass is pitch black with creosote, and the walls are shiny black. They may call it clean, but ain't too clean on the inside! :loco:

Today, outside temp is 17° and 10 mph wind. This morning, I loaded firebox full and set the stat 1/4" less than wide open. Got home 11 hours later, house temp is 79°, stove has big coals for another hour or so of high heat output. Glass is about 50% dark haze. I don't get really clean glass unless I'm nearly wide open on the stat. Wood is two years seasoned under full cover, about 12-15% MC.

Tube stove. I burn a lot of eastern white pine lately. It burns hot and fast. In milder weather it means I have to start more fires than I would have to if I burned red maple or oak (or have windows open). I have a temp on my black pipe just above the stove. I keep it in the safe zone where earlier I used to keep it just below the safe zone trying to make a fire last longer. I used to get a build up of creosote in the horizontal pipe leading to the Class A chimney . Now that I don't try to push the lower limits of the stove I get very little build up in that horizontal pipe.

Ahhhh, ok. My wood is nearly all white & red oak, some ash. Good info for comparison.
