Man, the Craigslist planets aligned for this score. Guess what oak species it is.

    Welcome to the forum Jutt.

Yup, it is one of the white oaks. Also cut with a very dull saw by the looks of it.

Well, Dennis is correct about the saw, I had hit the ground at some point and dulled the crap out of my chain;) Nice catch Dennis.

Good call on the white oak variety fellas, to be exact its Gambel Oak or scrub oak. Just happens to be some of the larger scrub oak I've dealt with as usually this stuff is 2-3" diameter bushes. I realize this is the size of the branches on the oaks y'all have back east but it's pretty much the only kind of oak we have out here that's native.

I responded to a CL ad and the guy has an entire stand of this stuff. Around 25 trees or so of this size. I was able to get a pretty decent load but would like to get more...of course.

    Few more pics:

That's primo firewood there Jutt. Never experienced "scrub oak", but deal with white and chestnut oak quite often. Does scrub oak have that heavenly vanilla aroma like the other white oak species?

Looks to me like a great score there!

That looks like it will heat you good. You are right about oaks running a little bigger in the east. A good one will be 2-3 cords, not inches.

Nice job- don't feel bad if you become an oak junkie. Having to let it season for a few years just forces you to keep cutting. Welcome to the site!

Looks like a good find and welcome aboard. I too like your avatar pic. 2 of the things I love the most, a good looking dog and a nice pile of firewood. I burnt a small bit of white oak last year along with some red, this year is going to be a red and white oak winter. Guess that's like a red Fall and a White Christmas.

By the way I love reading the craiglist stories, around here you don't see much for decent stuff on craigslist, everybody that advertises around here it seems their pile of limbs has gold plated bark or at least you'd think so.

Thanks! Yep, I grew up in SW Virginia and it smells very similar to white oak (Q. Alba) when cut.

Its a white oak family the species is juat different. So it will smell the same. They all have Tyloses in the fibers, round lobed leaves and 2 year maturing acorns.

White oak, post oak, chestnut, swamp chestnut, sand post oak...there all white oak?

    Fagacea quercus sp.

I know this is 4 years later but it does smell nice. It reminds me of freshly baked ginger bread.
