Tree service neighbor friend asked me if I wanted to take away the BW he was cutting. He apparently had no desire to make it anything more than normal tree job. I’ve never burned any. Grabbed 2 trailer full. Lots of branches that I’ll have to throw on the sawbuck. First impression is that it wasn’t the heaviest of wood. I know it’s in the ballpark of soft maple BTU- wise. I will likely split a few rough “boards” with the hydro to keep for something or other.
You were looking for faster drying species, so there you have it. Always nice to get something you haven't gotten before too.
Good grab Steve! Hand splits very easily. You are correct on the lower btu's. The heartwood contains iodine and will burn pretty colors. Heartwood is also very rot resistant. Rare score for me as I've only had one good one in my 5.5+ years on FHC. Usually a few pieces. Wouldn't mind finding more.
Too bad you don't live closer. I got tons of it: Except for the triple Poplar (left), the two Shagbark Hickorys (left of power pole) and the Hackberry (tailgate of truck) almost all of this is BW.
It is ashy. I have a good bit of walnut from my dad's neighbor's property. Good and dry, not bad at all. Had better, had worse.
For a wood that makes great great gun stocks and is dense enough to withstand the forces of recoil, from the lowly .22 cal rimfire up to the largest magnums, it sure doesn't make a lot of heat. Dries quick and burns better than silver and red maple. I wouldn't turn it down. Good catch!
2nd or 3rd on the red maple... I'd def take that over Walnut but happy with either species. But yes Red Maple is better I think, and I would take Silver over it too.
