I was alerted that chip drop dropped off wood this afternoon.. so after work I cut it up

Like like silver maple, but there's no leaves.

Some big stuff, and some good sized logs.

I was able to get it all cut to length or at least moveable pieces.

I burnt up 2 tanks of gas and oil in the dolkita
    Before...

    And after two tanks

This big boy is getting split vertically with the splitter in place. I don't feel like noodling it and since it's maple it's should split easily. Any splits that are too long will be shortened in my jig. That big ugly thing is about 22" long Screenshot_20240807-204951.png .
I also changed the oil on my truck in between tanks of gas in the saw.

That's some nice work, brother. Looks great, that was a good idea to take a break between tanks of gas. Hope those crotches split well for you.

Thank you! I was at 11% of oil life on the meter, and with a tow trip with the boat behind my truck this weekend it was due.

Being maple, it should split fine, at least most of the crotch pieces. As long as I can get it more manageable then I can move it. No FEL does equate to having more work. If I did have a FEl, I would probably make it into a giant swedish candle, or just roll it in to the woods. Lol

Nice to come home to. Almost looks like honey locust.

Almost looks that way bark wise, but it's definitely not heavy enough. There were a few honey locust twigs with leaves on them in the delivery, but they came from my HL tree that they bumped with their truck. The only other leaves were hosta leaves, but those were just because the tree was a yard tree and by hostas. It's definitely not Norway maple, because there's no dark Heartwood. I'm thinking it could be a hybrid, seeing it was a yard tree.

Ok. Yesterday I started to split this pile. It's honey locust. And It's freaking heavy.

From yesterday's splitting and hauling after work. I only split and hauled 1 load. PXL_20240809_010601008.jpg

Load 2 from today after work
    PXL_20240809_234917644.jpg

What's left. Another full load this will be. I got the first 2 of the three rounds from the biggest piece. With the crotchy one being the last. PXL_20240810_011145905.jpg

I need to sharpen my chain, cut a couple of these down to splittable length, and noodle the nasty big chunk. I wouldn't be shocked if that piece is 900+ lbs.
    Screenshot_20240809-233032.png

The pile of all locust on the left. It will be a good 2 cords when it's all together. The previous pile of HL was my last score. The HL and box elder was from that last score too. I'll split that as well.

This will all be wood for 3 seasons from now. I've found that HL dress best with 3+ years of drying time.

Wow, that's even betterer than maple, since you have time for it to dry

Even better. Nice stuff there Hork!

I was starting to question my ID skills. Cant say I've seen SM with that color heartwood. I know some species may look different in certain areas of the country and closely resemble each other.

I mean yeah, I have time for it to dry, I was just hoping that this delivery of wood was going to be basically enough to fill out my woodshed bay for 25-26 winter heating. It will have to go for 26-27 winter now. I'm basically halfway to what I need for winter 26-27, with just HL. If I wanted to do that at least. I probably will only put half of it in that year's stacks and the other half will go to following years. I'm sure I'll find some ash, elm or some lower BTU stuff in between.

The bark on this HL looks so different than the HL in my yard, right next to this drop. My HL bark looks like all the rest I've scored over the years. This drop HL has got to be a different hybrid. The first night when I got it mostly bucked up, I was just concentrating on getting the task done. Then mowing the lawn smelling the sweet aroma of it over the fresh cut grass was enough. Then moving it had me thinking it was definitely heavier than any maple. First split of it erased any doubt of what it was.

Good looking hoard. Been a while since I’ve been able to run a full tank of fuel in one session, let alone two tanks.
Productive results with some good looking wood.

    Back at splitting PXL_20240810_200740524.jpg

There's a couple of big pieces that are too odd to split as is. There's one in this trailer load For now, those couple of pieces are just getting dumped by the pile.

Here's what's left. I'll empty the trailer because if I load it ask the way up, the steering gets light and I love rear tire traction and it's just more work.

Time for a rest, rehydrate and some fresh peach slices. PXL_20240810_201730325~2.jpg

I'll hit it again after the preseason football.

I luv Honey Locust. It does take a long time to dry, but putting some 15% in the stove on a cold winter night is comforting.

and you didn't even have to deal with massive thorns... great drop-off!!!

None of the HL here has thorns, and it smells so great. Very sweet smelling when you cut into it when freshly cut green.

Lol. First thing I thought of.

I only use a splitter like this for the big heavy stuff.
