This post was inspired by MikeInMa. It seams we both had similar ideas today. I had several big oaks taken out years ago and I'm finally getting around to stumping the last one. Got out today with the 395 and a 36" bar with full comp rs chain. Got a few wedges under it to make sure it was free. Strapped it and pulled it over with the jeep. Made a noodle cut down to the rot and wedged it apart from there. Was able to pull what's left of the heart wood out by hand. About here the 395 was getting dull so i grabbed the 372 with 24" bar and square chain to finish her off. Cut the other peice to firewood length and started swinging the maul. After the massacre.
Truthfully i was just going to chunk it up enough to move it to my disposal area. Got to peicing it out and it was in better shape than i imagined. So it'll probably get split smaller and added to the stacks
Those stump pieces like that are just a PITA if you ask me. Dulls the chain and takes too much time, plus you have all those goofy shaped pieces due to the root flare. But, you got it done and that's all that matters.
Truthfully i kept putting it off and putting it off cause you're right about it being no fun most times. Luckily this one didn't fight too hard. A 36" bar probably helped with that. Plus this was old enough the bark kinda fell off. So i took a square shovel and helped it along. That's also the main reason i wedged and sledged what i could. Nothing i hate more than to cut all the way around and your cuts not line up and there's a little peice holding it in the middle somewhere.
