We're Gaining

Yeah I know it happens every year I'm still in the winter mindset and am in no hurry to be dealing with mosquitoes and humidity again. Still, it's nice to see the days getting longer. That's my only real gripe about winter: the short days. As January drags on I do start to notice the extra daylight, albeit slowly.

Weedeating is still far off, as it should be!

 

LOL I hear ya. I don't look forward to weed whacking in the heat, mowing the lawn every week, sitting in traffic roasting away, etc. I enjoy the summer for certain activities but I like winter equally.

 

I noticed that yesterday evening, it was light here till after 6. Wasn't that way a few weeks ago. Maybe the snow helps a little too. Glad to see it.

 

There been so much cloud cover lately it’s been hard to notice. Another 2-4” starting about 3-4a tonight.

 

I noticed it too. Been almost a month since the Winter solstice. Stacked until after dusk tonight. The street light lit the way at storage.

 

I like that the sun is in the sky later in the afternoon. This time of year is the coldest and snowiest part of winter around here, with the "real" heating season just getting going over the last week or so. That is the promise of a couple more months of cold. None of that dealing with fauna until at least mid-late May and more likely June. However, black fly season starts in earlyy to mid May and I never look forward to that.

 

Yes give me more light, I don’t know if they are getting the FLOCK out of the north or returning from further south, but I’m seeing lots of Robins.

 

I enjoy winter, but the short amount of daylight is depressing....literally. My wife has told me I'm the most irritable in November and December. I enjoy being outside doing projects. My favorite time of year has always been the Fall.

 

I have been seeing robins in downtown Cleveland this month...Don't recall seeing them this time of year in the past

 

I eagerly await the winter solstice and cherish every minute of daylight gained.

 

As as firsts for me this winter; I have a pair of bluebirds this winter (I rarely have them even in summer) and a Baltimore Oriole (which I don't think I've ever seen one in the 10 years I've been here). The oriole just showed on January 10, 2024 - or at least that is the first time I saw him at the feeders. Even though the feeders are about 70' away from my back porch, he's so bright it would be hard to miss (that is why I got out the binoculars, because I saw the bright color).

 

We have had bluebirds here for the last 3 winters. Have never seen a 1 during the summers.

 

I’ve seen a few Robins around in CT this winter as well. Odd to see.

The extra daylight has been nice in the evenings.

 

Seems its been warm enough for them. I still see worms under logs when i move them so they have a food source. None seen in North Haven, not that im looking for them in the yard.

 

We have a decent number of bluebirds in my area. I saw 3-4 yesterday, taking turns popping in and out of one of the nesting boxes we have. Figured they were trying to hide out from the cold a bit?

 

Ah yes. More daylight per day. I sure notice and appreciate it.
