I was scrounging the other day and a neighbor down the road said he had free wood. I stopped by and grabbed a load. Is this red or silver maple? It was surrounded by oaks, so those were the only leaves around.
I can't call it. If I could pick up a round I could tell you. How's it split? One identifier I use for Sugar is that the branches usually exit the trunk at a 90 degree angle where red & silver will have a more upward direction.
Tree was on the ground when I got there and all branches cleaned up. Here are a few more splits. Splits pretty easy and most pieces just pop off the splitter, except where there is a knot. Any other thoughts?
All the added dark color in the middle says red maple. Sugar maple is quite pink all the way through and only a very small red heart
I agree with Eric. The worm/borer damage on the one barkless piece in post #2 looks typical of red maple IME.
Thanks guys....going with red. After searching old posts here about red maple, I am guessing I should go back for more....it is close to home and already cut into rounds. Below is what is left. How long can it hold up if it is stacked and covered?
I have some in the stove right now that is 4 or 5 years in the stack. So long as you split it right away, stack it and top cover it, there is no problem keeping it.
