Passed this yesterday. Day old cutting. Went this morning to grab it. Hickory on a steep hill. Was only able take smalls as too dangerous to get down the hill safely. Nice black birch trunk made the trip worthwhile. Left some smaller elm behind. Not a typical Brad load but decent wood
Nice score despite the hill and massive tangle of briars and vines. Sometimes the extra work makes the victory extra sweet
I was feeling REALLY old this morning and was dragging at the score. The top of the hill hickory borders on an access road for a quarry and when i was up there i asked an employee driving by and he said they wouldnt allow me to drive up there to cut and load. With my easier FBM scores i think im going to phase out roadside scores if possible. Tired of weeds, prickers, culverts etc. The BB was in a muddy ditch and had to be careful getting it cut. Just dont quote me on that next week when i stumble upon a big multi cord primo score roadside. The only time its extra sweet is a BL score.
Well done, Brad! I love cutting black birch. The smell is really nice. Having gravity on your side, to a degree, was helpful. Crap on the slope, not so much.
It doesn’t get much play on these pages, but I rate BB right up there with BL. Similar heat, better coaling and seasons fast. BL pulls ahead slightly though for the extreme rot resistance but nobody ever said it smells nice.
Nice haul Brad! Have you seen the cutting they’ve been doing on 15 South starting in Wallyworld? Quote an operation! Two long boom machines do the cutting, then a massive mobile chipper takes care of what they cut. Lots of good wood being chipped. But I get it, gotta be efficient and keep the highway lanes open.
I knew you would put limitations on your roadside scrounges. Good job, too bad you couldn't just roll them down the hill.
I passed it while traveling North bound yesterday. Had someone else this week mention that to me too. I have scrounged on 15 where i can park safely. As a matter of fact i still have some BL to get but wont divulge the location!
I've come across some decent roadside scores, but looks like a PITA to get. Sometimes you just have to say it's not worth beating yourself for and let nature takes it course. Unless of course it's BL. You get an A on this one Brad.
I thought of that but a very busy road and not worth it. Experience has taught me well. Back country road id be going for it. I have rolled downhill and into the side of my truck
I sit here typing and its bugging the chit out of me there's hickory still sitting on top of that hill.
Last weekend I journeyed down to the woman’s house. Corner of 154 and 82 there’s an old score from a few years ago the state never bothered trying to collect. During the green months you can’t see them but they’re all on display again. Nasty little hills they dropped the trees on top and left them. One huge White Oak. Bothers me every time I see them but sometimes ya just gotta say it’s not worth it. Like you said, one wrong move and those big logs will come rolling right out into traffic or destroy truck or trailer. Easier scores will come.
Change in work schedule today had me going this way again. Finished the job early and realized the 261 was still in the PU. Something possessed me to stop and take the elm. 20 minutes to cut and load. Split a few just to see degree of difficulty. Entry wound. Exit wound. If i come across elm again ill take smaller rounds as they split straight even though they are stringy. Wondering if ill be evicted from a certain members signature line as a result of this.
You're braver than I! You well know I happen to be somewhat of an elm fanboy, but taken alive and split right away is not my idea of a good time The last one like that I got in August 2022 but didn't process until April this year. You never know how any individual tree will act though. At least they were a nice size to work with with no large hernia-making rounds. Oh, that barkless elm I got from you over 2 years ago should be just about superb this burning season, if I don't let it go another year.
I still have this stack of elm rounds. They've been there for a couple of years, since 12/2021. I should take one and see if the bark is easily removed. If so, maybe I'll take a few whacks at it with the x27 and/or wedge/sledge.
You could always invite Dave Sirchopsalot's over to help? I thought of leaving them in the round for a year and try hand splitting, but with the hydro and always needing inventory ill split right away. Be sure to show the results as im very curious. Those were fresh cut green right Mike?
