    The spikes are hammered into a stump, log or piece of wood.

    the saw bar is then mounted into the clamp to hold it for sharpening.

    Ahh ok, it's just upside down. I have one and know how to use it, it's around for just in case scenarios if I don't want to hug the saw to sharpen
