This stack was in the yard where im working. They had a few trees taken down a while ago. Father and grown son rented a splitter and stacked it to burn in their fireplace. Nicer than most homeowner efforts that i encounter with wood sitting and rotting away. Close to three cords based on my guess. Red oak and red maple from what i could see.
Based on the other stack not pictured id say yes. Older wood still good. He had it top covered when i was there earlier this Summer.
I thought only cars were ever considered "rotting away" in the owners yard with an "I'll get to it one day" attitude. I wouldn't think anything above the second row would be at risk of rotting soon. I have a decent size stack of Redbud (you read that correctly) sitting in a barn for the last 4 years I haven't got to yet. They were 10" or so diameter trees that fell over. Still good but they are out of the weather and on pallets over gravel. I would think red oak would hold up for awhile.
Always good to stumble across stacks out there—it’s a good sign of others that know what they’re doing. Last Friday I bumped into a guy I don’t know too well, and he saw my van loaded with firewood. “You know there’s a burn ban right now?” he asked, thinking I was going to toss it in a fire pit over Labor Day weekend. I replied “This wood? Oh, it’s not getting burned until 2027.” His mouth hung open for a minute, and I didn’t feel like explaining it so the conversation moved on to something else.
How long are those splits Brad? They look to be 20" or more. Wonder what kind of stove they have? Or maybe I'm just seeing them wrong.
Splits looked mostly 16-18" but could be some longer shorter. I dont know if they bucked the wood themselves. He burns it in a fireplace. House is maybe 30 years old so "standard" sized residential fireplace.
