My Sunday morning job was to eliminate this punky broken Virginia Pine over a driveway. My plan was to notch it towards the road and pull it out.

It was sketchy cutting the notch, because it was rotten and I didn’t know how much back force would be on it. Cut, watch for movement and have an escape plan if it starts collapsing. The plan mostly worked. I was hoping to drag the whole tree out, but it got wedged.

Nice when a job goes (sort of) to plan. Nice work.

Some good work there. Plans don’t always go as planned, and sometimes that’s the plan.

Nice job getting it down safely. Those rotten dead broken ones can be nerve wracking.

I take it the wood was returned to the Earth?

If you know running bowline and 3 ring you can do almost all tree work. They don’t lock up when put under extreme loading.

Always good to be cutting safely with escape routes planned. Sounds like you thought about the physics and planned accordingly. How much of a back cut did you get in there?

My back cut was too deep on one side and severed some of the hinge. I didn’t want to stop and stick my head around to look, because I was worried about it coming at me on the backside. Couldn’t take my eye off the ball. Fortunately I don’t think there was much pressure pushing towards me. Tbh I shouldn’t have been doing it alone. It’s good to have another set of eyes on trees like that and a 911 caller.

I’ll show you sometime. As much tree work as you do it would help. Clove hitch is another useful knot.
I think 3 ring is a variation of butterfly.
