Thought I had a score of all hickory. Shag on top of the pile but once I started winching them onboard I couldn’t figure out what this other stuff is.
Seems to split easy as witnessed by some of the splitting it did when they cut it down.
I saw a branch that goes to the middle of the tree
Seems rather light when I picked up a notch I cut off before loading.
Solid color through the log. It’s not tulip.
Lots of red stain under the bark.

That be aspen Joe, looks like bigtooth aspen to me based on the leaf. Burns hot and fast.

Thanks Eric. Soooo that’s pretty much what the rest of the country calls poplar?

Yeah a lot of people call it poplar, which is fitting because it's in the populus family alongside cottonwood. In Michigan they call it popple. I prefer the word aspen because it conjures up images in my head of the rocky mountains while I'm stuck here in the megalopolis concrete jungle. :)

Stuff is light and cuts stupid fast so I'm sure your sawmill guy would have a ball with it. I'll bet it's fine for building non load-bearing walls with ;)

Some friends built 2 log homes (built and lived in one then moved to a new area and did it again) from popple, said it's harder that all get out once dry.

In NC Bigtooth aspen is extremely rare, only found in a few spots here and there (outside of Boone...Avery County...). When people mention poplar here they are referring to the tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera)
