What’s going on everyone! Been a bit since I’ve been on, usually being on here is a winter time activity for me. Summer just gets crazy with work, kids sports, and the like. However this summer has been exceptionally busy as our family has finally obtained a long awaited new homestead. Closed in April but didn’t move in until mid June. We’ve been scrimping and saving for quite a while now and been searching for the last 5 years or so. Over those last 5 years only 3 properties came up that we were willing to purchase and we were beat out on all 3 with either a non contingent or cash offer. Well I guess 4th time is the charm because if finally happened. Acquired a 170 year old farmhouse along with 12 acres to call home. About 2/3 wooded and the other 1/3 lawn and scrub. Mostly maple and dead ash with some nice cherry mixed in. I’ll have enough firewood in just dead ash for quite some time. House has 2 fireplaces, one in the living room and one in the kitchen. Plans are an insert of some sort (probably something used if I can find in good condition) and a new Woodstock fireview in the kitchen fireplace. Both of which will have to wait until next year as we had quite a few projects already that have chewed into the savings. Fortunately for us there is a gas line running through the back of the property so we receive a gas allotment that should cover most of the year. Anyways, was clearing some trees away from where a new garage is being built in a couple months and was thinking of FHC while cutting so just thought I’d check in and provide a few pictures. Hope your all keeping your stacks full and all is well. Like to say I’d be around the forum more but I now have enough work to keep me busy until I can apply for my AARP card!

maple and pine that grew together. Had to study this one a bit before felling.

Soon to be home of new fireview. As you can see chimney was leaking. Chimney repair was one of the projects that ate up a good chunk of money. 3 chimneys on house, all needing some form of repair. Should have been a mason!$
IMG_4704.jpeg What most of the woods look like. Mostly young maple. Don’t know anything about making syrup but maybe that’s something that’s in my future.

    Congrats on the new digs.

Our woods is similar, mostly ash and maple.
A handful of oak, and a nice little section of shag hickory.

    Nice little pond I see.

yes, pond is nice but has been neglected. Definitely on the list but not something that is going to happen right away. Lots to clear away from it and get some sort of aeration going.

Chaz I May have asked you before but whereabouts in WNY are you? It’s ok if you don’t want to put it out there.

Just east of Olean. Much further south and I'd be in Pa.

Gotcha. A ways from me then. I’m right in the center between springville and East Aurora.

Welcome to the dream! We bought our dream place a couple of years ago. It's a lot of work and yet so satisfying. We need pics of the progress!

Thanks everyone. We’re happy despite all the work that comes along with it. And man is it going to be a lot. But like Dok440 said it will be satisfying I’m sure. Here’s one of the first projects we tackled.

I don’t know how long someone can live with a giant hole in their foundation but I guess quite a while, I’m sure it was like that for a couple previous owners at least. The owners right before us redid the kitchen but didn’t fix the outside coming in, kinda messed up priorities to me. Anyways, it’s fixed. Just have to get some hangers for the service wire, little grading and figure out a door for bottom of stairs before winter. It’s good to have friends and family in the concrete business. 10” walls and the stairs are solid concrete right to the ground. I’d say that should outlive me and probably the next couple owners after that! Also a pic of the old bore well that I fixed up. Wife can use that water for gardens now.
