Yesterday I bucked up a tractor carryall load. It holds almost a half cord. I went out to split it this morning and found what I thought was White Oak was actually Black Gum! SOB, was I angry at myself. To be fair it had all been pushed into a pile by the skider and was kind of beat up looking. I wondered why it was cutting so effortlessly while I was bucking it. Its small enough I can just stack it in rounds and it will eventually dry. You guys that hate splitting Elm should try a Gum tree. I don't think they are near as difficult as Gum.
Been there, done that. It was equally horrid (as compared to my 2 elm experiences). I have pics but... .
You were thinking man this saw is running good today...and I really got that chain sharpened up tight n right! Might want to just noodle that stuff into "split sized chunks" saved the headache of "splitting" it. It doesn't burn too bad...
You nailed it. I had just filed it and lowered the depth guages. Was congratulating myself on what a great job I had done.
Oh no! Thats enough to ruin any hoarders day. First time i scrounged BG i didnt know what it was. Looked like WO. It was a smaller diameter log that was IDed here as BG. I bucked and split it. Learned my lesson and will never touch the stuff again. Hopefully your next cut goes better.
Been there Done that, Got that T-shirt several times!!! And pics to prove it! It's bad when a 35 ton machine has issues going through it... I will say, left to reasonable size rounds, it burns well and a hot fire. If I get it, I try to not go bigger then 8" diameter.
