I saw these cone shaped piles of sawdust on my firewood. Didn’t see any bugs though. Any ideas what causes this? I live in the southern part of North Carolina. The wood is mostly white oak.
probably powderpost beetles. There's a bunch of different ones some you don't want in your house, others don't want to be in your house.
Some woods are more prone to them then others... But completely normal... If you look under the bark you'll usually see a white larvae... I throw them in the chicken run, chickens love them...
Some type of borer. Certain woods seem to attract them more than others. Maple and hickory here. Very common issue with firewood even when covered or stored in a shed. Wood is a dead plant and pretty much anything dead in nature is food for the living.
I thought the same thing the first time I saw them. My insect control company told me it was from Japanese beetles. Borers bore wood, termites eat wood he said. They leave different trails, or tracks.
LOL, Scarab grubs, of which japanese beetle is a very common one, eat turf grass roots. They're a lawn care scourge. One of the first things on the maintenance list for lawn, right after proper watering and feeding, is grub control. They'll eat many kinds of root, but turf is a favorit.
