A customer called last week, said he was having 2 hickories taken down next to his house. Did we want the wood? Yes sir, we do. Tree service cut it up and cleaned up all the limbs. He kept 2 small stacks of limb wood. We got a small load... Said he wanted a discount on next year's wood. His front yard has a lot of trees in it. I asked if he would like to thin it some...I saw several of these, bark looked familiar, but I've never cut any. I noticed the leaves were still on the trees and looked similar to beech... Checked plant app to be sure... Yep, iron wood. If he will let us cut those, we'll give him the next load.
I’ve got a very smsll amount of ironwood in my stacks. Currently drying. Look forward to trying it in a couple years
Hop Hornbeam we call it around here. That is one of the biggest ones I have ever seen. Burns very well in my furnace.
I've never thought I've seen any hophornbeam around. But I wonder if I'm glancing at it and calling it an Elm.... To me, I think I'd have to see it with leaf on, and maybe the flowers.
Nice load Jeff. Not used to seeing single rounds in the trailer. Cool find on the ironwood. Never have scored any myself, except maybe a sapling or two. My understanding it doesnt get that big.
What a score! As for the ironwood, it takes forever to get any size, so, I go easy on them unless they have to go, especially big ones. I got some a few years ago from a tornado blowdown and am starting to burn some.
Sure wish you were closer, we could hook you up... Had a couple saw logs on this load we got a couple weeks ago.
I've thought it was elm too, until I noticed the bark is smoother and it holds it's leaves late like beech does.
Yep, that was a different look...... It's gonna take some sorting, for sure. I don't know if they had to cut it in pieces to get it down or bucked it on the ground. Rolled it down to the grapple and loaded 2 or 3 rounds at a time.
I can see why you might think it an Elm. The bark is close to the same color. One of the notable differences to me is how the Hornbeam bark shows itself in those very long "strips" with parallel sides. The ones growing on my place also have the ends of those strips slightly detached and curling up.
It actually was too close to home. I was riding in my truck, it was raining, the front was coming in, when I noticed the clouds ahead were seriously dark and ominous looking. I called a buddy and he said tornado warnings were out and they were about to get in the closet, as last report it was 17 miles away and headed straight for them. My situation turned out ok because the super dark clouds were just rain but as it came upon me, there were many swirling masses below the lead frontal squall line and I thought to myself that this isn't good. Anyway, just heavy rain. My buddy texted me later and said they were ok, it went by them. The sad news is that tornado killed two people, a mother and son. The mother was found in the woods a ways from her house and her 8 year old son was found 1/2 mile away. Tragic, what a terrible way to go, I can't imagine. Life is a mystery and often terribly unfair. Tornadoes are such wicked things.
