Hat’s off to them fellers. Almost like they’re members of FHC. Thought maybe I saw ol’ walt in the background of one them video scenes… Great share, thanks Tim.
Maybe that’s something we at FHC could support and promote a “woodchuck” type franchises across our membership area?
I wonder how they determine who gets wood? How do you keep unworthy people from freeloading? Because they will. I wonder if you could require they show proof they are getting assistance or something like that. I have sometimes thought of doing something for needy firewood burners here, even greatly discounted wood, but I never could figure out how you'd keep people from taking advantage of you. I have elected to just do things here and there for those in need. I had an unfortunate experience with 'needy' people recently. The 'needy' turned out to be conmen. And a conwoman. An entire family, siblings. I have done them favors for years now and turns out they are nothing but professional freeloaders. I called them on it and got my money they owned me and also my gf's money and told them they better shape up or be doing jail time. I don't think that was much of a threat for the woman, I now know she's in and out of jail. Must like it. I was disappointed her brothers have learned her tricks, I thought they were honorable. I never did trust her. They'd batmouth her and heck, now she taught 'em the con business! Not only took advantage of kind souls but also churches.
I’ve seen where they worked and wondered what it was there. Hell, I just went to Boothbay yesterday. It’s a harbor town with tons of out of state people who just throw cash around. The year round population is pretty low and lots of older people. Those towns are mostly summer spots and completely close up when tourists leave. Not much commercial fishing done out of there anymore, lots of charters now.
I guess part of doing good deeds, is discernment. If people aire a need, and someone else here knows them a little batter (past experience, or has had more communication with) that goes pretty far in decision making. If a few of us go on a cut for someone else, we could assess their real need on the spot and adjust the day and time spent, in the moment. Worst case, we hang out and cut wood together, even for a shorter day. We get to hang out, eat, talk shop . . . But, I'd be good to form an "away group" that travels a little for a little group fun. SCA
Can't like it but so so true. See is all the time. I've been taken as well and it's hard to digest sometimes. Just hope I never stop trying to be an okay (maybe even good) person.
One has to be careful and it is sad but I've seen good people taken advantage of and then the turn into hateful people. Don't let the bad actions of a few turn you off from doing good.
There are similar groups throughout Maine. I have been volunteering with the Down East Wood Bank, it’s a good time, bunch of old guys just trying to stay busy and do some good. One of the people in the group has property, a big stand of mature oaks that have been decimated by the Brown Tail Moth. Kind of sad to see so many dead standing trees…but they make great firewood. We have work days just felling tree after tree. Unfortunately there is no space to split and stack so we have to load the rounds on trucks and trailers and haul them to some space that the local land trust has graciously allowed the wood bank to use. We estimate 60-70 cords on hand.
That’s awesome! And a hat tip to that studio design the broadcasters used. There’s a similar group in our small Vermont town. I’ve been thinking about offering to help out. The local Congregational Church is the point of contact for distributing the wood for those in need.
Had a shoveling party on Monday. And then a S/S party today. Crazy how much snow we lost in a few days.
