I have this red oak with a pretty good bend at the top that is over our Gazebo. It also has a bit of a lean in that direction as well I have been studying it all summer and it has had me questioning the drop. I got to looking at it today while I was burning a brush pile, and now that most of the leaves are gone it doesn't look as bad as I thought. Still not sure about it. May need to rope it and use a tractor to help pull it away when I do decide to drop it.
You sound like me. I will look at and think about options for months sometimes years on trees around my house. The problem is they keep getting bigger. Do you have a big shot, slick line and throw bag, or can you get one for Xmas? I’d put a rope over that bend, or as high as you can get it and hook it to your truck or tractor.
And wind. Make sure the wind is helping you not fighting you the day you drop it. With or without leaves.
Well today was the day. Perfect low wind, nice and sunny so it seemed like as good a day as any to put it on the ground. Everything went as planned and it even dropped where I wanted. Got it all bucked up and even split a few with the fiskars.
Rope or no rope? I’ve often wondered, but never tried, if a rope could be tied to another tree at a right angle to ensure it falls the direction you want.
I just pulled about a 20"DBH standing dead chestnut oak over on Sunday with about a 120 degree angle on the rope from another tree.
