Back right up, cut and load. Sassafras taken down by a storm in recent years and pushed into a pile. Got to talking a woman working at Lowes recently and firewood came up. They were looking for someone to take it. Checked it out earlier this week as it was close by. Not something id aggressively seek, but need more SS wood and this will be ready in a few months. They wanted the cut logs. Cut the primo wood and left the crappier stuff behind.
IMG_1431.JPG Top log in this pic was over 40' long and straight as an arrow. IMG_1432.JPG IMG_1433.JPG
Few nice mill logs plus a cool hollow one. Sassafras is very rot resistant. IMG_1436.JPG IMG_1437.JPG Probably one of the lightest full loads ive ever had in the F150. Dirtier skidded wood dulled the 261. IMG_1435.JPG IMG_1434.JPG Split as i unloaded. Finished a stack too. IMG_1438.JPG IMG_1440.JPG Ill go back to get the mill logs next week.

Nice score! I’ve never even seen a Sassafras tree. But I’d like to burn some!

Side note. Google tells me that Sassafras has a 18.9 mbtu rating. That’s pretty decent!

    Nice score, Brad.

I like saving the hollow logs to put vertically on top of a campfire. The flames shoot up and out of it.

I think they are rather generous with that btu rating. Its very light weight. Smells great although the smell wasnt as strong on this being down for a while. When i went there i was snapping twigs on saplings and having them sniff them. :loco:  There was a grove of them in their back woods. Many still standing.

Its the shorter log in the one pic. Maybe 6' long. I want to bring it for the granddaughter and make some type of game or something. The hollow is big. Probably can fit a volleyball through it. I have a few other hanging around here much to her dismay!

You did it again! I like sassafras, is so easy to split, so light, and the wood grain is really nice sometimes, quite attractive wood. Makes a nice flame.

Brad, do you use semi-chisel chain in those types of conditions?

I have one loop of semi for 375/20". Bought it last Winter for use in frozen BL, but never did. Most of the wood wasnt that dirty.

That was easy picking. I like the smell of sassafras. We have some on our place, nothing that big. Most die off when smalle...probably biggest I've seen here was 8-10"...

Same around here, never seen one anywhere near as big as some postings on fhc. I fact, some.of the really big ones in threads, ive thought the person was pulling our leg till others chimed in and didn't call BS. I've seen some about the size of a softball, maybe a bit larger....usually see them more as bushes/saplings here. I've wondered why.....

Interesting. Wonder why they dont get that big down there?

Ive posted this pic before of the biggest ive ever see. It was roadside, but couldnt find property owner to get okay cut and take. Still had to admire it though and take pics. IMG_2650.JPG IMG_2652.JPG

I measured one to submit for state champion before looking up the state champion. Ffs the champion is huge. It’s a farmyard tree that dwarfed the one I measured.

Yeah, our mutant sassafras in Connecticut can get abnormally huge. Makes you feel like He-Man when you can lift a whole round onto the truck with minimal effort. I love the stuff, and really like dark purple and brown streaks when you're splitting the fresh stuff. I primarily use it for kindling.
