    I’m still trying to wrap my head around thornless honey locust. The thorny variety is like a weed around here, we have to apply tordon to the stumps to kill it. It does make good firewood.

    They're selectively bred that way, as I understand it. Most are infertile and won't even produce seed pods. There's a couple thornless ones in my town that do have pods, so they must be a different cultivar altogether. I read that if I was to plant seeds from a thornless variety, that the progeny trees would revert to being "wild" with thorns. I might have to test that for myself next year :)
