Why isn't there a thread on crappie fishing? It's that time of year when the crappie are on the banks, we need crappie in the freezer, and I have a crappie attitude... so what more reason does one need to go fishing. I caught one small keeper in the first 3 hours, then they decided it was time to eat. Ended up with a limit of 15, most were about 10 - 11 inches, a couple were about 12, using jigs. The males are moving up, the females are staging, the best is yet to come.
Aww man I love Crappie fishing. Great catch!!! I had a spot years ago under a bridge at a reservoir out in PA. Every cast you had one on................tons of fun!
This is on a reservoir, Mark Twain Lake. It is fun, and my favorite fresh water fish. Sounds like you could use a new spot for crappie.
I've since moved to NJ and fished many lakes in S.Jersey. I did find them in a lake I use to fish regularly but I just never could find them in quantity like I did. I could sit under that bridge for hours and just land one after another. The lake got infested with zebra mussels and you had to leave your boat their for 10+ days and it was just to much for me to do being over in S.Jersey. I'd like to take my son back up their you can rent boats and fish.
I haven't been able to go fishing in awhile much less catch any keepers! Sent from my LE2127 using Tapatalk
Some of my favorite memories was with my dad fishing, and all things outdoors. I tried getting my grand daughter into crappie fishing, but she was terrified the crappie were going to pull her into the lake. She would get a bite, and drop the pole.. She was 13 at the time, and suffers from anxiety, no matter how much I explained that wasn't possible, she wasn't believing it. I hope you get your son out, I'm sure he would enjoy it.
I have very fond memories of crappie fishing with my dad when I was young. Still one of my favorite fish to go after.
Likewise it was my Dad taking me fishing to all those lake out in PA. He worked out there often and learned some places. I take my son every summer a few times. Last summer we did some crabbing, man that was fun and he really really enjoyed it. He's now driving the boat and getting older. Time sure does fly by sometimes.............
I went on a 10 day float trip in Canada about 30 years ago, we dropped yellow Mister Twister plastic lures at the end of rapids and caught the heck out of walleye. Cooked them up on shore, and yes, walleye are no doubt one of the best tasting fish. I've never trolled for walleye, we have them here in small numbers, but I've never fished for them. I would if I thought I could catch them. I accidentally caught a 5 pounder on a Johnson silver spoon about 5 years ago. I guess those are walleye in your profile picture? Nice fish! Did you troll cranks for them in Iowa?
Brown trout in my pic caught on small Mister Twister white jigs. We do troll crankbaits here successfully for walleye. Casting and retrieving a Mister Twister (white usually) works well also. Betting your walleye don't get pursued to much degree if they are far and few between. May be worth a few hrs of trying. Sounds like your Canada experience was outstanding. Hard to beat shore lunch!
Every once in a while you hear about fishermen that happen to get into some walleye, but it's not common. Some of those same guys also catch them on the Mississippi River. I may have to study up on trying it here, it would be fun to actually catch one on purpose. I do troll for crappie in the summer, but the trees make it tricky, and I'd rather dip jigs. We also troll and cast for white bass.
Back when I was a fisherman, we would drift fish for walleye with ErieDearies...Most of the charter boats troll for them with some kind of deep diving lure:
