I'm usually not this lucky, as I seem to find hardware in trees with the saw. However I cut up a a dead ash that fell down off the side of my driveway yesterday, and found this while splitting. Not big, but still would have been a chain changer. What a nail is doing in a random tree in the woods is anyone's guess.

Happy Easter to all my fellow Firewood Hoarders. :salute: DSC00596.JPG

Maybe it once hung a bird feeder or bird box?

Who knows how or why it got there. You are right though that would have wiped out a chain.

Better to find it in the split or in the ashes than with the chain saw. Amazes me how common it is in trees.
I saved this log last week just because it was cool growing around the wire. IMG_0846.JPG

Yep, I'd rather be lucky than good any day. I've found my share for sure.

I know where there’s a big chunk of cedar with some woven wire fence in it. I could ship it to you if you are starting a collection.

A few years ago I cut a tree behind the house. I didn't find any nails with the chainsaw but I found one in every round for the first 15-20 feet when I split them.
