Spotted this black locust last month while in the area. 40 minutes from home so not a scrounge id go just to cut. Offered it up to jo191145 as its not far from him, but he said i could go for it. The job i did today was close by so i figured while i was in the area i might as well cut a load. Went by in the warm weather and the overgrowth mustve obscured it. My peripheral vision rarely misses BL. Looks like it was cut many months ago. Couple good sized trees. Couple hours cut, split, and load. More rot than i normally see in BL but still decent wood. At least another heaping load there. Lots of barkless BL scattered around too. Now when can i just "happen to be in the area" again??? Have to help split the hickory from my other thread today so it will be soon! LOCUST MANIA 2022!
I think it was cut back in the Spring based on the weathered ends and maybe 25% of the bark was loose. When i rolled the logs to finish the cut some were above the ground clutter and clean.
I was "in the area" again yesterday. (oldest step daughter and BF moved there recently, his father is next door and its five minutes from there). We live 40 minutes away. Nice load for 2.5 hours work. Took my time working with snow cover and a hill. Some scraps and an old barkless blowover ill get next time.
The "cleaver"? Fiskars product. Light weight and ideal for looser bark removal and i spear the end of a round to carry it. Versatile Tool
Load #3. Another visit to her daughter today. I went and cut another load. Bark on wood cleaned up. The rest was barkless blowdowns & tops. Sliced a couple "rounds" for cookies. Her daughter will use them for pavers/stepping "stones". Barbed wire i found after bucking. Hiding underneath a log. Still more there but smaller barkless wood and "clean up" wood. Forgot to get a loaded truck pic. Get one in the morning.
Oh man, I've hit barbed wire and high tensile wire used in apple tree growth training. It's nasty on the chains. Glad you apparently missed it.
You and me both. Toward the end of the day and wouldve abruptly ended the cut. Using the 16" bar on the 261 and doubt i wouldve used the bigger saw with the 24" bar.
Looking good Brad. You’re gonna have to hit exit 17 soon after you wipe out the entire western part of the state
