A while back I asked a guy taking down a tree if I could have it and he said sure so he did but I am not sure what kind of wood it is and I already chainsawed 3/4 of it

Bark in the first pic is a dead ringer for Northern Red Oak.

Welcom to the land of the Woodenheads! Lots of great folks here.

As others have said, the bark looks like red oak. Closer pictures of a fresh cut end grain would be helpful.

Not sure where Rockland county is.... but logs here will get that dark/black on the ends, especially if they have been piled and dont get a lot of air flow, or shaded. Might be a bit of some kind of mold.....?

My guess would be some kind of fungus. Maybe mold..

Hmm...my stacks run E/W so the ends facing north never get direct sun...the wood grays over time, but I've never seen the oak go black like that...

I've seen oak get dark like that by being buried by wet leaves for a couple of years.

I have some black ended oak logs. They were laying in the woods for a few years before I hauled them home.

I’m thinking more stored under trees where not a whole lot of water evaporates after rain

Welcome woodnut! We are near to each other. I live within walking distance of Rockland.

Depending on where you are in Rockland you should be able to get tree guys to give you all the wood that you need. The closer to NJ the easier it will be. It took a while for a friend of mine in Pomona to get somebody to drop him wood. In Bergen county they will keep bringing it till you cry uncle.

Welcome woodnut , you’re gonna like it here, I guarantee it! We like pics, dogs and beer. Lots of good folks willing to lend sage advice and a hand whenever possible. What we are best at is approving your purchase of accoutrements to enhance your hoard. You need something, just ask and we will endorse spending your money on all necessary and sometimes excessive purchases, just because. Ask, and we will bless, it’s really that simple! Seriously, welcome and don’t hestitate to ask any questions. Nice to meet you :handshake:
