For sure. I'll bet there are lots of us who have lived through an October snow storm. It has been a long, long time since we've had one here though. The last one I remember was in 1987 and that was as we were trying to drive west on I-64 coming from Connecticut. Just about at the state line it started snowing. We did not get very far and it was really piling up. Soon, the traffic stopped. We did not want to be stuck there all night so we decided to cross to the other side. It was touchy and we really did not know if we could do it but there was my son and I and my wife could drive. I decided to go for it. We made it. Next day when we went through there, a huge area with broken tree limbs and power lines down and huge areas with no power. I don't remember for sure how much snow fell but I'm thinking they said over 24" in places. Nasty for sure.
I saw 2 flocks of Canadian geese flying in a V the other day...but fortunately they were heading North Maybe they were invaders from the southern border? Been a cool summer here, the Jetstream drops down here and brings some sweet low 80's/upper 50's overnight with low humidity. Then it gradually turns back to a steam oven for a couple weeks.
On leaves dropping.. We start to lose poplar leaves in late August - even those in wet areas. It takes the rest of the leaves to gradually change through late October -mid November. I'm cleaning them up all through December here
We usually start burning on September 15, we'll see this year. We're in for some warm weather..........then some cold weather for the end of August. September looks like a chitty month according to the Farmers' Almanac, tropical chit headed this way, one for the New England States and one coming in across PA, Mid Atlantic up through NY, stay tuned!
Squirrels seem to be feeding really heavy in my area. Heavier than I am accustom to seeing. Maybe they are remembering last winter. Lol
We just received our 2015 Farmers' Almanac, it looks like we'll have some 40 below weather coming this winter if they're correct. It won't last like last year but we'll get our colder snaps according to the forecast. They have some big storms coming in for the east coast, I think they come in early, I'll check next time I'm on the throne!
My bird feeder is really squirrels proof, yet I have had to fill it twice as often as I have in the past three months. The activity picked up at end of July. What I am seeing there are yellow finches, chickadees, ans red cardinals. There are some others, but these are the dominate feeders. There is a chipmunk on the ground catching fall out.
Our squirrels are always feeding heavy or at least burying it (squirreling it away). That is how we plant most of our new oaks.
Remember on the finches that August is their season for new chicks so they feed pretty heavy in August and September.
IF it were ONLY amount of daylight, then trees would turn color on the exact same day every year. In fact, at the exact same hour, every year. Think about it.
It looks like we'll get another shot of 80 - 90 degree weather coming in for the east coast in another 7 days or so, then the chitty weather moves in.
I have a hickory tree out here that has been dropping a little bit of leaves for a month now it does it every year
I wrote this on another thread this morning. For the middle of August here it's more like the end of Sept early Oct. 49 deg in the Berkshires this morn, 51 my way. Highs in the mid- 70's...nice and dry too. I wonder if we'll get a last blast of summer ??
It's been relatively very comfortable here in PA this summer, albeit a little too cool for swimming and such. I've only been in my parents' pool twice this year, our A/C has only been used a total of around 2 weeks compared to three full months last summer! Everything is still green and lush here which is very rare for August, it's usually dry and burned out by now. I'm looking forward to a cool crisp autumn, some nice crisp mornings and evenings in the deer stand come archery season in around 6-7 weeks. I'm itching to fire up the NZ!!
As someone who is cutting hay for the winter, I am feeling blessed to still have green grass and cooler weather to work it. Now if only I can get a break in the rain to cut it.
Y'all can enjoy your fall like temps - it's steamy here now and heading for 97-99 the rest of the week... Alabama summer arrives in mid-late August(this year it decided to anyways), only hit 98 a couple times this year. Cooling off just in time for a.....wait for it....21 DAY VACATION, should be plenty of cutting with a new to me 441C-M
