Seven years ago I cleared a small area in my woods for a wildlife opening. Most of it is rock or chestnut oak with a little red oak. About 1.5 cord, CSS wood has been top covered in a rectangular pile since then. It was sort of an "insurance" stash if something happened that I could not get firewood. So with some health issues and wanting to clear trees where it was located, I am burning it this season. Let me tell you, 7 year seasoned oak burns awesome! Much appreciated with the cold weather we have been experiencing. DSC08334.JPG DSC00399.JPG

Sounds like it was a great investment in time and effort. Love the payoff!!

Very nice. I have some 4 year and 2 year oak and about 2 cord of this year ash. We don’t burn a lot so my oak should be good by the time o get through the ash we have.

Congratulations to you. There are few who think like you do but you did the right thing. I sometimes have wondered if it is mainly those who have experienced difficult times who will have those "insurance" wood stacks? And yes, that stuff can be sweet to burn. Enjoy the heat.

Thanks. I have a 2 cord "insurance" stash under roof in a shed from clearing that wildlife opening too. Hopefully I will not need to use it in the near future.

My mom had a stack of splits in the carport she would never burn and it stayed that way for years. I used to ask her and she would say it was for emergencies. She never ended up using it and when we sold her house the wood went somewhere. She had that old school great depression era mentality and was a hoarder. Guess the apple doesnt fall far from the tree! :emb:

Did someone say apple??? Apple is good wood!
