I think you are right. Cedar is not common around these parts. Thanks.

I stripped some of the bark off. It looks like iron wood also. 0122221636a_Film2.jpg 0122221636_Film2.jpg

Not knowing anything and terrible at tree ID..........could that be elm?

The wood looks very similar to some elm that I am currently burning. Just that twisted kind of look makes me wonder.

Ironwood is a common name given to more than one tree.

I have some of that in our woods. Biggest I’ve seen is 12” trunk.

Looks like it may be Black Gum. Its the only wood that I know of that grows in a twist like that. I had some one time that came in a load of logs. My splitter would not split it, had to the splitter wedge to cut through those pieces. If you think Elm is bad, HA Ha try splitting Black Gum.

Big difference between the weight of cedar vs hop hornbeam.

The split has to be hop hornbeam, it has some weight to it and when I split one if them does not have a cedar smell. I remember putting it in the stack in 2018 and not knowing what it was, just didn't think of snapping a pic and posting.

Size, twist, knots/shed limbs are very consistent with Redbud, bark is very close.

99% Sure that is elm, all I burned for a few years when they were dying off my parents place.

I think "Ironwood" is in the same family.

Yup, that's Hophornbeam for sure. Ostrya Virginiana. I saved a piece from the chipper a few weeks ago. Have a bunch of saplings scattered around the edge of the woods here.
